I feel that I would be the ideal candidate to receive a free copy of your book because I have been into custom cars my whole life. I have known Mr. Skonzakes for many years and live very close to him. I could PROBABLY get him to autograph it (along with Rik) and it would stay in safe keeping forever. I say this because my wife says that I never get rid of anything. This may be close to the truth because I have had my books and my friends for MANY years. At any rate, it would be displayed as often as possible at shows, etc., and this would truly be free advertising! Anyway, best of luck Rik and Palle.

December 1, 2013 at 05:28 #8212Keith HenlineParticipantBack in the early ‘8henshen I was in cub scouts, we were just starting to build our pine wood derby cars. My family had gone to visit my aunt and uncle. When we got there, I started talking to my uncle about the pine wood derby cars and he asked me what kind of car I wanted to build. I told him I didn’t really know because I didn’t know a lot about cars at the time. My family drove old cars but I hadn’t really thought anything about them. My uncle said to give him a minute and he left the room. When he came back, he handed me a stack of magazines (Street Rodder, Car craft, Hot Rod, etc). He said maybe these will help you. Little did I know it at the time, but my life changed that day. I poured over those magazines like a new found treasure, but the one that hooked me was the one that had coverage of the first KKOA Lead sled spectacular. I fell in love with those cars the second I saw them. I didn’t know what kind they were, I just knew they were the coolest things I had ever seen. The Jack Stewart Ford was one of those cars. From that day forward, old cars especially kustoms and car magazines have been an major part of my life and always will. Back to the pinewood derby car, I had another uncle who had been a scout leader most of his life. I told him about the car magazines and the kind of car I wanted to build, he told me he had just the thing for me. He went down into his basement and in a few minutes, he came back and handed me a box. In it was a pinewood derby kits from 1960’s. My dad and I built that kit into a traditional forties style hot rod without even knowing it (Narrow tires, gloss black paint, red interior, lake pipes, etc). The car was so much faster than any of the new cars that I almost got disqualified. They did change the rules the following year so the old cars couldn’t be run. Both my uncles and my father are gone now, but I still have that pinewood derby car and the magazines that inspired it.

Being younger and admiring the vintage customs it was like a blessing to find other like minds. The inspiration Rik gives is unmeasurable. I remember the first time I stumbled upon a post and then followed a link to his posting of pictures. WOW! My mind was blown by the depth and devotion to a subject I thought I would never see. “Custom Cars!” In a world of billet do-dads and gizmos on cars it’s hard to find information about what it was really like.
I can’t thank Rik enough for helping a guy out in the middle of BFE to find eye candy to survive.
I would love a chance to get this book.
Thanks again!
December 1, 2013 at 13:34 #8214Todd BucklesParticipantWell I just love Kustoms and this one is one of the gretest of the times.Would be great to have another book on a Custom that helped get the custom going strong. I also build models and would be a great book to get all the information on how the car was built and be able to build a model to replicate this beatiful car. Books like this need to be written more often to show the History and what people went through to build thes magnificent cars. These kind of books help the younger generationwith the history of the times. which everybody should set down and studyas these times will never happen again.
December 1, 2013 at 15:20 #8215RogueParticipantI love the true early customs. I was like a kid in a candy store at “Customs, Then and Now”. I again was blown away at the opportunity to see the “Jack Stewart Ford” in the raw. I appreciate the lengths Pelle is going to preserve JSF’s history and allowing us in on it. I also appreciate the grand scale that Rik goes to document not only JSF, but all true historic Customs and making that accessible to the rest of us. I can’t wait for the next installment.
December 1, 2013 at 18:19 #8217Keith BrownParticipantThanks for this opportunity to win a copy of your book Rik! I’ve followed along with the Jack Stewart restoration thread on the HAMB, and admire the quality of work Palle is putting into the car. He’s obviously doing the car justice, and has a great eye for customs (his Cadillac is no joke either!).
I’ve not had the opportunity to purchase a copy of this book yet, but it is in my must read list. I’m excited about reading through the book to not only learn more about Jack and his Ford, but also to look at all the other beautiful cars that appear in the book. I’ll use it for research and reference purposes as I build on my 49 Cad powered, padded topped 39 Zephyr.
Thanks again Rik.
December 1, 2013 at 20:33 #8218Jeff ScheckterParticipantI would like to win this book because I have not been a big Customs guy in the past. Mostly, I have focused on hotrods, but I really enjoy cars and fine craftsmanship in many venues. So while I subscribe to the HAMB and Rodders Journal, I also have subscriptions to Lowrider and StreetScene. I think that having this great looking book would help educate me and make me another fan of the Custom Car Scene. Even if I don’t win, thanks for getting me to know this interesting forum.
December 2, 2013 at 04:37 #8220Dave VillaParticipantI bought a copy for myself, and would like to have one to give to my mom and dad or my grandmother.
My grandfather had custom cars built and painted by various customizers here in California. None by Barris or the Ayala brothers, but looking at the pictures and reading the book made me remember him, and I know mom, dad and grammy would feel it was very special too.
Plus, I really like patches. hahaha!
Great work on the restoration and wonderful writing in the book.
Thanks,
dave
