Tom Black, well known from his green custom 1940 Mercury convertible with padded top, and deep blue chopped 1941 Cadillac also with padded top has created another masterpiece. A sectioned 1941 Cadillac convertible.
Bert Gustafsson shared one photo he had found on facebook the other day, and soon after that people mentioned that the car, which had been unidentified until then, was the recently finished creation of Oregon’s Tom Black.
The car is really amazing with its three inch chopped windshield and 3 inch sectioned body. I’m trying to find out some more info and especially more photos and when I do I will share them here. If any of you guys find more photos, please share them here. I have send Tom an email, and hopefully he gets back to me with some more info.I have found some photos taken by Guy Recordon, who owns an upholstery shop. He has been involved in the project, not sure if it was completely built at his shop, or if he only did the interior and is going to do the padded top.
This is the info from Guy“This is a project that I am honored to be involved in. Built by my shop mate it’s a 1941 Cadillac convertible, chopped 3 inches, sectioned 3 inches, headlights frenched, ’47 bumpers, tail lights shaved and a hand made steel tonneau. I still have to make a Carson top for it but I think it looks pretty damnwd cool like this!”

Haunting shades of the Y-Job.  A clinic in traditional custom car building that would make Neil Emory and Clay Jensen smile.  From bumper to tail light mounted bumper, every alteration fits.  And that paint color is so…  regal.
July 20, 2017 at 20:08 #52143Rik HovingKeymasterThis is what Tom Black had to say about his new ’41 Cadillac.
“Did this car over the last year, chopped 2.5″, sectioned 3″, all above the fenders, plus usual de-chrome and smoothing work. Also stretched the panel behind the top, above the deck lid 9″. ( that was Eric Black’s idea). Â After it was all done, I decided a 2Â Seater metal tonneau would be cool, it comes off to put Carson top on, 5 seats again.
It’s really a nice car! Drives great! Has its original leather interior. I like this one, I think it’s for keeps!”Enjoy the beauty of Customizing

I say the seat should be lower and further back.
Mind you, I would not have said that if I hadn’t seen the pic of the dude sitting in it.
July 21, 2017 at 08:26 #52153Rik HovingKeymasterLarry, the Eric Black Tom mentioned it the illustrator designer Eric Black from Casper. Not sure if Eric and Tom are related. I will ask.
Esthetically it would look better if the seat was lower, and slightly further back. I guess, since the interior is all stock and original it is all in the stock position…

I’d like to think that perhaps the use of the parade boot idea on Tom’s Caddy may have been inspired by Rik and my collaboration for my 39. ( Which came full circle back to the 53 Eldorados ( which were inspired by Cord and Auburn, and Murphy and other coachbuilders prior to that). I’ve noticed a few custom converts lately with extended catwalks. It just proves that these design ideas came from very early on and still cause great excitement when presented today.Â

Agree with Ian. To me it looks better with the top on. (Not that anyone asked me….LOL)
Stunning car either way though.
