October 4, 2018 at 15:41 #61146Dave TartagliaParticipantI found this video, Cruising 1946 L.A. from the Prelinger Archives on YouTube. It is shot from a moving vehicle andĀ runs 3:05 and goes by quickly.
There are are two Carson-topped cars and an open roadster parked on the side of the boulevard. The open roadster and a ’46 Ford? appear at about 1:50, just after a shot of a movie theater playing The Outlaw with Jane Russell! These appear again as the car circles the block, I think.
The second Carson top car is a green ’36 Ford at :2:48.
I am attaching two blurry screen shots. If anyone knows a way to slow down the video and get a better pic, please do and post.
October 4, 2018 at 16:14 #61147Rik HovingKeymasterGreat find Dave… love those old movies. I don’t really think there is another way to capture pictures from these… they are all very low res movies, and a screen shot is just the best you can do.
Enjoy the beauty of Customizing
October 4, 2018 at 20:06 #61148Dave TartagliaParticipantI forgot to include a link to Cruising 1946 L.A.
This is as close to time travel as you’re going to get! The film is only 3 minutes long but the more I look, the more I see. And the accompanying music, L.A. Noir by Andrew Hale is very atmospheric.
I believe there is a way to slow down the frame rate in YouTube. The screen captures will be the same quality, but I might be able to get the best frame to take the shot, if that makes sense.

October 5, 2018 at 13:42 #61156Dave TartagliaParticipantTwo hot rods from the 1940s, found on a period film on YouTube. The first is a jalopy, looks to have been made from a cabriolet, judging by the windshield post. The second is a quite nicely finished Ford Model A with full fenders and wide whitewalls.

October 6, 2018 at 13:23 #61162kustomlandParticipantHoley crap Dave…!!! That popped up on my u tube last night and I sat down and stopped every shot like you and I wrote down theĀ time for the shot on paper just last night…!!!Ā That crazy…Ā You beat me to it…!!! There was a few more customs in there but very hard to see, Took me like 2 hours to watch it frame by frame….!! tho it killed a Friday night doing it…!!
There was another too from San Francisco and there was a custom in that one also…..
On the other film Hollywood BLVD 1957 at mins or so there is a shaved custom 49 / 50 Ford in grey primerĀ its behind a 57 Chevrolet wagon…!!
Looks like the guy drove with his Appleton 112 ‘s spots on, It was harder to watch the night one when he mounted the camera going forward compared to when he had it in the rear facing backwards, That why it was so hard to watch and I had to slow it all down….!!!
That ROADSTER IS CLEAN AS F…!! Look at the chop on the car parked to the right of the roadster facing the building…!!! Mean…..Seems like life was so much nicer and simpler …..
Tho IĀ did not relies how dark it was at night and the driving really shows you how people were able top get away with crime in the dark…..Imagine now the cops asking you what the car looked like….??? ID be like um it was metallic something and I have no idea what make it was…..Imagine how every one back there knew there cars, Yes officer it was a 1940 Ford custom with raised fenders channeled, RecessĀ license platesĀ Ā a HALL TOP 112’s with the WESTERGARD drop and Buick skirtsĀ ….! Officer ” that’s 41 buick skirts correct .?
Yes officer… Ā I think it had a BARRIS PLAQUE also….!!!

October 6, 2018 at 16:51 #61166Dave TartagliaParticipantYeah, Kustomland. I was pretty excited, too!
After posting I discovered that it is pretty easy to slow down YouTube videos. The following link explains it. Screen shots may still be blurry, but at least you can get the car in the best position.
October 6, 2018 at 17:37 #61167Dave TartagliaParticipantA few more interesting screen grabs from Cruising 1946 L.A.:
The roadster and another shot of the Carson top car
October 6, 2018 at 17:40 #61168Dave TartagliaParticipantAnd neat hot dog stand and a night club featuring the Nat Cole Trio!
October 7, 2018 at 04:51 #61173kustomlandParticipantDave that’s awesome, Look how wonderful the world could be then after the war, It would of been 2 worlds, 1 world with life moving forward and fast as if the war never slowed any one down, And the second people trying to catch up on life they missed because of the war, A time when things boomed andĀ every one had a fair chance atĀ life, You could just be contentĀ with a little HOT DOG STAND ! As a job….!!
Look at how colorful the world was and just how pleasing it was to look and see things all around you…..
Just a wonderful timeĀ when gals would of actually been fun to chase…..Ā LOL HAHAHA
Just think if your oldĀ FordĀ broke a taillight, You could just walk up to someone else’s car in the parking lot and take theres…!!!Ā Ā Or a time when you saw a awesome kustom car with a carson top and you could leave you address and name and try and buy it………!!!
Bummed out I missed all this…… Now we can only hope and dream to find a kustom wreck….. And I have to buy the glas the ”Ā RUBY WOO32Ā ” Ruby Red Ā MAC LIPSTICK from the 40’s Because they don’t know what I like….
On another note , I was talking to John Munro ” WORLDS FASTEST INDIAN ” MOTORCYCLE,Ā And his wife still looked like she was from the 1940’s So I bought herĀ RUBY WOO32 Ruby RED LIPSTICK FromĀ MACĀ Ā and she lovedĀ it….!!! Ā Reminded her of her youthful days….Ā I laughed and told her she could wear it and kiss John all over like she was 21 again…!!!

October 8, 2018 at 01:15 #61176Dave TartagliaParticipantFrom another video on YouTube: A (homemade?) travel camper towing a roadster.
Can anyone ID the roadster? Looks European.
October 8, 2018 at 01:24 #61177Dave TartagliaParticipantFrom the same video. A gorgeous 1940 Buick Roadmaster, in two-tone pink! It looks to be in a dealer’s window.
The tag on the front says, “Hawaiian Orchid.” Was that the color or the name of the car or both? I can’t find that color on the 1940 Buick color chart so it must be a special order or custom job. Was this a show car, perhaps? Also this car wears the beautiful teardrop skirts and a custom chrome kick-plate on the rear fender.
