Hey guys, does anybody know if anyone is reproducing the early custom style single bar flipper hubcaps? I think a few years ago, some shops were reproducing them, but I can’t seem to find them now. From time to time I see original flipper caps for sale, but most of the original caps need to be restored. (photo borrowed from the internet).
Do you guys think there is a market for reproduction single bar flippers? I’m considering reproducing them, but my concern is the market is very small and I don’t know if I could sell enough to re-coop my investment.
Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks DavidAttachments:

Sacramento speed shop in cali has a lot of stuff, from n.o.s to re pop. the guy has a lot of very rare speed equipment. In 2010 he had a NEW OLD STOCK Du Vull windo frame for a roadster I tired to buy it but he was holding onto it for a guy with a 32 Ford.Re producing the caps would be a lot of time and money and it may take some time to sell them all to make some money back and that depends on how they even turn out..! If there is a blem of some kind word might spread not to buy them and that could hurt your sales.?
I know there is a few guy re casting the flippers and there even on cough cough E bay. I thought my self about re doing the flippers as there are a few styles but tis already been done so I moved on from the idea.I’m pretty sure I saw the Sacramento vintage shop had hub caps for sale.
As for restoring old caps I find that more fun then the idea of making new ones myself personally. From time to time you will see some in a box NEW OLD STOCK at the fathers day L.A ROADSTER SHOW but they will command top fedia $$$ Thereis a guy who sells them with a stall that has chicken wire at the front of his stall….. He also has all the top end stuff like Zephyr tail lights, Caddy bumpers, skirts , Appleton’s Original DAGO axels ect ….. Just if your looking to go to that swap. It worth it… I found that swap is the best around because there is a guy who sells nothing but original FORD over head conversions………. For model T and flat head Ford 8v. He has HAL heads, RAJO , Fronty , Miller heads, Miller Scofield heads, Winfield carbs, Harmon and Collins cams, Kong ignitions and all that flave a flave stuff.
I know it is a bit off topic David but if you have a tail dragger you only need 2 hub caps per car for the front.
Personally if you did re do the hub caps I would not buy a re pop cap because finding them is half the fun….

I WOULD BE HAPPY TO BUY FOUR CAPS—THERE ARE SOME CAPS OUT THERE, BUT MOST THAT I SEE ARE FOR NON-FORD APPLICATIONS. I ASSUME THAT YOURS WOULD BE FOR THE 40-48 FORD AND MERC RIMS. I HOPE THAT THE CUSTOM COMMUNITY SUPPORTS THIS PROJECT. GOOD LUCK. KURT MCCORMICKJanuary 16, 2016 at 07:35 #33938Rik HovingKeymasterJac’s Hollywood Flippers is suposed to make them… But I have seen very little movement from them.
I do get quite a few people asking me about them, if I know where to get them. So I think there would be a market for them. If you would sell them completely finished, it would save the buyer a lot of time and money of restoring the original once and having them plated.Enjoy the beauty of Customizing
January 16, 2016 at 09:37 #33940J.B.ParticipantThe problem is usually not the outside, but the back that fits the rim. So, I think that finding a nice set and then remake the backside to fit your rim is the way to go. The ones I will use for the LaSalle do not fit my rims, so they need to be modified. Important is that the outside has a nice design of ripples etc.
I am planning to use 16″ caps on my 15″ wheels. This will make the caps go all the way out and meet up with a nice rippled beauty ring. I hope this will work. The 15″ Hollywood flippers are too small in diameter, I think.
But I do believe that there could be a market for nice replicas that fits most rims. They are superior in the appearance compared to the full cover ones you can buy today.
January 17, 2016 at 10:08 #33948AndreasParticipantMaking replicas of the flipper/onebar hubcap…..both yes and no!
Yes: they are hard to find, and to find a pair is not easy (some need four and thats even harder)
i have seen some kind of bolted backside/fitting on a few ones! if making repops then that can be a thing to do?No: the fun part is to search and finally find. and if repops come up i am afraid to see them on “wrong” cars!
Well it sounds hard but how many time have you seen Appletons on “Wrong” cars?
Compared to Dummy-spots that is easy to buy and you can see them on many nice cars but often mounted in the “wrong” way!If you need Appletons, they can be found! the same about the flippers!
We dont want Flippers and Appletons to be like the Cadillac -59 taillights!……..seen on everything from bicycles to cars and everything between!Kustomland, looks like i have the other on the pair!
January 17, 2016 at 14:04 #33951kustomlandParticipantHAHAHA arrrhhh Andreas that’s the other one I’ve been looking for. I found my flipper hub cap in Canada in an old barn on a wall and I searched every were hoping the other one was misplaced or fell off but I could not find it any were…..There was an original 1932 Ford roadster in the barn with parts. I cap was correct for my 35 Ford and I have not been able to find another.
So are you challenging me to Rock-paper-scissors for your other hub cap…………. lol ?They are hard to find but if every rare part was so easy to find it would not be so fun going to swap meets ect
Andreas I wish you never showed me that photo of your hub cap……… Now im sad……
KUSTOMLANDJanuary 19, 2016 at 23:49 #33998David WolkParticipantThanks guys for your input. It is very helpful.
I do understand the thrill of the hunt for vintage parts, but I have to admit it is so much easier to buy something like reproduction sombrero hubcaps than it is to restore them.I’m thinking about them and still weighing all the facts. Thanks
January 22, 2016 at 07:25 #34089Manuel ReyesParticipantThe Wheelsmith in Corona,CA made some. I have a set of thrm for my ’36 Ford early.custom.
That’s thr good news, the not so good news is they only fit their rims. So I stepped up and bought s pair
of each. Just running the rims and hubcsps up front. Because of lowering snd skirts, you wont see them
out back.
Anyhow…

January 22, 2016 at 19:33 #34118AndreasParticipantManuel, Do you have any pics of the caps mounted on the wheels? and ofcourseof the 36 Ford to!
Are they 14″ diameter? (for 16″ wheel)Kustomland, Did you buy the cap that ended on EBAY yesterday? looked like yours!
(unfortunately there are many caps that looks the same on pic but in reality there are many different models!)Here is one other fun cap i have! Have a pair of these, they are only 13.3/4″. still for a 16″ rim but i have to make them fit my Wide-fives!

KUSTOMLANDJanuary 24, 2016 at 09:53 #34152AndreasParticipantIt went for $155
Unfortunately it was missing the backside where it mounts to the wheel.

picture album sites on Fotki. Can’t get on the site right now. I can try later and copy a photo
to post here. Or you can try to get on the site and find my album in the 1936 Ford Custom list.
Rik created an album for my ’36 Ford Custom. There’s a front 3/4 view that shows the
hubcaps and trim rings that The WheelSmith provided. Again, they only fit their rims,
which I bought 2 of. They are 15″ rims.
On The WheelSmith home page with all their hubcaps shown, this hubcap appears on the bottom of the page.
Happy hunting.
