Kevin Fritz shared these rather sad…. but very interesting photos on the wrecked George Barris restyled Johnny Zaro 1941 Ford with us. The current care taker Russ Erlinger of Belleville, Illinois is showing the Zaro Ford at the Custom Car Revival this weekend. Russ showed these snapshots he took of the rolled over Custom in 1954. We knew that he had damaged the car in an accident in 1954, but had never seen how severe the damage to the car was. We must be so thankful to him that he repaired all the major damage and not just trashed the car. Also very interesting is to see that at the time of the accident in 1954 the car had already the Plymouth bumpers added. Russ mentioned this about the accident “I got the car in 1953 off of used car lot in Illinois. I wrecked it like that in 1954. And then rebuilt it. When I flipped it, my wife ended up inside the roof sliding down the road in the top. She did not get hurt. The padded top saved her.” WOW
This is how it used to look, before Barris added a new grille.
And these photos where taken a few years ago. What an amazing job they did restoring the car from that bad wreck.

July 8, 2019 at 15:54 #64562Rik HovingKeymasterFrom the Jimmy Barter Collection comes this great photo. Custom 1950 Mercury of Lester Scarlett from Long Beach. Taken at the 1954 Peterson Motorama Show at the Pan Pacific Motorama. Anybody knows more about this Mercury? I have seen two Mercs from the early 1950’s that. Could have evolved into this one, but I’m not sure. Such an great looking Mercury, and as far as I know never featured in any magazine.
