But last night Jamie Couture shared some really great 1953 photos of the earliest version of Frank Maratta’s 1940 Mercury
That is one of the ugliest cars ever built. And famous for it. Now I have to go and wash my eyes with bleach. Thanks Rik.
LOL yeah at some point you would think someone would have told him as much when it was being built. 🙂
August 25, 2017 at 18:32 #52919TorchieParticipantLet’s face it gang. Not every custom built was a diamond……..:)
I like to see Pictures of all of them. And I really dig the old picture the most. This was back when there were no patterns set (Like we have now). Regardless of how some of these cars look ,(The good. The bad. and the Ugly.) these were the originators. We are just the imitators.
Chop on……..:)

August 27, 2017 at 11:22 #52960Rik HovingKeymasterKevan Sledge is selling this car for a friend.
The car is suposed to be the first Custom famous Customizer Joe Wilhelm built for himself. It is an 1939 Nash Coupe and was started in the late 1940’s Over the years more changed were made to it by Joe. Joe owned the car from 1946 till 1960.
According Kevan the car is in rough condition but savable.
The guy who owns it now said he talked to Joe’s wife about it years ago and she confirmed it was Joe Wilhelm’s car. She even said they were driving the car when they got Married. Joe bought the car shortly after WWII and started to customize it right away. The front end treatment was done in the mid 50’s and resembles the famous 55 Jaguar he built for Andy Anderson. Apperently there are some old late 1940’s photos of the car in the Wilhelm family, but so far I have not been able to see them. I would love to see how this one looked like when first Restyled by Joe. Very Interesting! Please contact Kevan on Facebook or Instagram for more info.

“-55 Chev built as a custom around 1958 in NorCal…”
The shaved drip rail, reshaped B-Pillars and rounded door corners caught my eye… very much early 50’s styling elements.
