Hope I don’t wear you out with these, but here’s a slight variation, inspired by the Royal Victoria.

I saw some photos of this really fantastic 1937 Chevy 3-window coupe at this years Santa Maria Show. It has a nice chop, low headlights, Packard grille, skirts etc. Very close to a Digital Dream Harry Westergard Style Custom I had in mind for a long time. So I decided to take this already super nice Custom a step further… or perhaps more like back in time (removing the typical modern stance, tries and wheels.) I added some wider white wall tires, replaced the chrome wheels with single bar flipper hubcaps, modified the stance (The actual car is more or less laying frame but was photographed with some air in the system). I raised the side window openings (a GM flaw) and also added a slight more hump to the back of the roof to flow better with the new position of the side windows. I added ’36 Chevy hood sides, sectioned the bumper guards and added chrome trim around the windshield. For me this now is a Custom Car that could have driven from the Harry Westergard Shop in the early/mid 1940’s.
    Digital Restyling fun project.

    This looks fantastic Rik.

It has always amazed me that GM didn’t get the side windows right. I wonder why?

1936 Auburn 852 SC Boattail Speedster Digital Restyling Design Study.⁣

The Auburn Boattail Speedsters originally designs by Gordon Buehrig are absolutely perfect the way they came from the factory. But… I always liked the look of them when they were slightly restyled. Back in the 1940’s there were a few, and in more recent years a few more Custom Auburns have been done. All these inspired me to create my dream Auburn Custom. Perhaps not something to actually create, since a lot of stuff was done to get the lines the way I had them in my mind. But as a Design Study it was a lot of fun to create. I started with a nice side view photo from the Mecum Auction site.⁣

The suspension was lowered, the hood front of the belt-line and cowl were repositioned to get a slight back drop flow instead of a front rake on the stock car. The doors were stretched in the back and reshaped in the front. The hood sides were modified and external exhaust removed. The main body was extended down and the frame cover reduced in hight, and reshaped. ⁣

The front fenders were reshaped at the top, as well as in the front were I added extra material to cover the tires completely when viewed from the front. 1936 Cadillac head and taillights were added. On the rear fenders I created flush fender skirts and the bumpers front and rear were replaced with 1936 Cadillac Units. I also added he hubcaps from the 1936 Cadillac, but hammered out the Cadillac script to give them a nice smooth custom look.

Two cultures, portrayed spot-on:  the concourse d’elegance scene of pre-War elegance in French coachbuilding; the California birth of customizing as a purely American take on rolling sculpture.

A clinic!  Thank you Rik Hoving,

Beautiful beyond belief , Im a white wall guy so no.2 for me . The enlarged door in three directions are stunning , the area under the door is to wrap the frame in sheetmetal , if someone would build it maybe the frame could be tucked in further ? Its already been 15 years ago since we made the AUBURN STREAMLINE CUSTOM DREAMS COME TRUE thread , there have been attempts but not full blown trad custom look like these pictures , maybe some day , the dream is alive !

I decided to take a crack at that podgy Vedette.  I lowered and shortened the Mercury-style front fender to lengthen the body visually. Shaved and lowered, thinned the side chrome. Roofline modeled after chopped ’50s torpedo Buick.

I had done a 3-window Coupe version of the Vedette Coupe a week or so ago.

    Here is my version.

A while ago I did a side view image of a more contemporary restyled Volvo Amazon.

Wolf added a version based on it with a restyled chop and skirt… You know diehard traditional guy 🙂

Last weekend I had some time and started to think about the Amazon with Skirts again. I did not want to change the top from my earlier version, just to see if it could look good with skirts.

I lowered the side trim, reduced the height of the rear wheel opening, added skirts and modified the stance. It could work… perhaps a taillight rear fender modification and frenched headlights will help the style more, but at this time I was not interested in that. I still like the original version better though. Perhaps one day I will start over with an Amazone done purely traditional which will require a different style chop.

1967 Ford Econoline Van, “mild” custom. Chopped top by sectioning the body just below the door side window to make the windshield and door window level at the bottom. Plus Modified wheel openings and cleaned up body.

That is the Econoline Supervan, it is 1-1/2 feet longer that the regular van.  The body seam on the extension is very visible.  In 1970, I bought one for $300 (running with significant accident damage).  I intended to make a camper van, had to sell it soon after to pay medical bills.
