Hey guys,
I joined here about a year ago, but haven’t really visited much, and have never posted. I plan to visit more often now.
Before I get to the new acquisition, a little about myself in case I’m a stranger. My name is Kyle, and I work for Hollywood Hot Rods, I’ve been a hot rod and custom enthusiast for quite some time now. I used to drive a ’54 chevy mild custom daily, still have it, but it’s been put back to a project. Hope to have it back on the road in the near future (still not finished though). The other projects in the works are a ’23 Model T roadster, ’30 Model A roadster, and a ’36 Ford pickup we are just making some changes to as we go.
Enough about that. On to the dream car.
I was speaking with a friend, and he has been working on a customers ’36 roadster, and the conversation turned to ’36’s. He mentioned that he wanted to build a ’36 roadster for himself, and that he thought he was going to end up building one from scratch because he didn’t want to cut up his 3 window. To which I replied, “you have a ’36 3 window?! I didn’t know that! That is my top dream custom, followed very closely by a ’40 Merc.”I’ve wanted a ’36 3 window for quite some time, but never thought I would be able to afford one any time soon. It has always been just a dream. So, we said that if he ever wanted to get rid of it that he would let me know, and we would see if we could make a deal. In my mind, that wasn’t happening anytime soon.
So, for the moment, I put it out of my mind. a little while after, I had to leave for Ohio on short notice to deal with a unpleasant family situation. I ended up spending about 3 weeks there. Near the end of my stay there, I get a message. “Hey buddy, if your interested in my 3W, I’m going to let it go. I’ll give you first dibs on her.” So, I think, “Oh shit, we only talked about that about a month ago, I thought it would be way longer. But, it’s the dream car” I ask if it’s cool if he can wait about the 5 days or so it’ll take me to get home and figure out if I can work it out. I’m cash poor at the moment, and space is almost nonexistent. But, again, it’s dream car. So, I get home, mull it over for a couple days, ask if he needs it out of the way quickly or not because I need time to get some cash and free up space. He says, there is no rush, he can hold it till I’m ready. So, then of course I have to say that I’ll take it.
So, now for all intents and purposes, I’m a ’36 Ford 3 window owner. It’s not yet pretty, and it needs a lot of work, but it’s mine, and I wasn’t sure that was ever going to happen. Not sure yet when I’ll get it in my grubby little hands, but I guess that’s just a matter of time. I need to finish some other projects before digging in, so once that happens I will document it here. The very basic description of the plan is a Westergaard style custom with some liberties. I don’t really have any good photos yet, so I’ll share what I’ve got.

Now that is a dream project… Looking forward to the time you get to start working on it.
I love the Westergard look.. and you will be able to find plenty of inspiration in the CCC-Articles and here on the forum. Is the car “complete”, as with fenders etc?

September 18, 2016 at 23:03 #43154Kyle ConnoleParticipantThanks Rik.
I will definitely be looking around here for inspiration.
The car is not 100% complete. I am missing the grill, running boards, deck lid, and one rear fender.
It’s ok though because most of whats missing was either going to be replaced, or customized to the point that I should just make my own. We have an extra rear fender at the shop that I can get my hands on, but with my luck it’ll be the same side that the car comes with.September 19, 2016 at 20:33 #43175Dave (a.k.a. rodncustomdreams)ParticipantReally one of the prettiest cars Ford ever did! You are one lucky fellow! I bet working where you do that you have plenty of ideas bouncing around in your mind, so now you have our attention, you must get to it! ;D

Thanks! I agree, I really love the lines of these cars. They just need a bit of restyling to really shine.
I’ve had ideas bouncing around for years! But now that it can become a reality, I’m thinking about them more seriously.Kyle, I look forward to seeing the project. Can’t go wrong with a 36. Good luck, David
Thanks! I can’t wait to get started even though it won’t be for a little while.

Thank you. Coming from you, I consider that quite the compliment. I have followed your ’36 build on the HAMB, and went through it all again here. The Merc chop as well. I have a lot of respect for your skill, and your eye for detail. I can’t wait to see your ’36 come to fruition, as well as my own. Yours is one of the sources of inspiration I do, and will continue to draw from on my own build.

I finally made the space for the car last weekend, and went to pick it up today.
I don’t have anything to tow a trailer with, nor a trailer. Â So, I had to rent Uhaul. Â They won’t let you tow with a pickup for some reason, so I had to get a box truck. Â Pick all that up nearby and head to the car. Â Load up the parts in the truck, and the car on the trailer. Â Then make way towards home. Â I picked up the car at my friends shop out in the Palm Springs area. Â My dad followed me in the car that we drove out there before picking up the truck and trailer.
Everything is going fine, until we hit our first bit of traffic. Â We slowed down significantly, but it wasn’t gridlock. Â I must have been going about 30mph or so. Â I hit a small bump, and afterward I look in my right sideview mirror, and although it’s a split second, it’s clear that I just saw my ’36 exit the freeway without me. Â Even though my dad was right behind me, we aren’t quite sure what happened. Â There was a lot of dirt in the car that would come out during bumps, but he said on that one a puff of dirt came out, and then the car just rolled off the trailer!
The car came off the trailer, veered left a little, then cut right through a couple lanes. Â It somehow threaded the needle between the cars, then knocked over a road sign, and came to rest at a chain link fence. Â Luckily we were at the speeds we were, and the location we were. Â There was plenty of room to pull the truck and trailer up and reload.
Upon inspection of the car, it seems that the rear ratchet straps broke, but we aren’t sure how the front came loose.
But we got it reloaded and made it home without any other major issue, although it was still a stressful hour and a half drive. Â So that’s the story so far, and I’ll get some photos of the carnage up real soon. Â True to ant car project, it’s already costing more time and money!

May 14, 2017 at 08:49 #50287Rik HovingKeymasterWOW.. scary moments…
I can only imagine how it must have felt seeing the car departure from the trailer in the rear view mirror, and not being able to do anything at all.
Good luck nobody and nothing got hurt.
Good luck with the start of the project.Enjoy the beauty of Customizing
May 14, 2017 at 14:02 #50289David ConradParticipant36 3 windows were always a dream car of mine and finally I got one and did it in an early custom style. Much better looking than ”street rod” style. IMO

It was pretty wild seeing that car exit the freeway in that mirror.
Thats a great looking car David, great inspiration.
Here is the before and after photos of my adventure.
So some more work was made for me, but I guess it’s part of the cars story now. Â I’ve got a couple options frame wise, so we’ll see where it goes. Â Gotta get a few other things done before I get to this one.
May 14, 2017 at 21:37 #50292Quentin HallParticipantG’day Kyle,
Very lucky indeed.
Now I see why they demand we box our chassis rails if doing any chassis mods. Damn, I guess you gotta be glass half full and think it could have been much, much worse.
I like your writing style and it certainly seems you are in the right place to keep us all entertained, so keep posting (even bout the other projects.) Next time get some chain and a U shackles to do a final ” hold me down “.
May 14, 2017 at 22:04 #50293Rik HovingKeymasterI know that place.. That’s David Martinez’s shop
