I was watching the 1940 Jack Benny movie, Buck Benny Rides Again, when I spotted an interesting custom car.
When Jack’s old Maxwell is involved in an accident, Jack demands the keys to Eddie “Rochester” Anderson’s car. A few moments later, Jack rolls out of the garage in a gorgeous 4-door convertible sedan. Only onscreen for a few seconds, I realized it was a custom.
At first I thought it was a 1938 Oldsmobile, based in the grille. But after some digging, I now believe it is a 1938 Studebaker State Commander (or maybe a State President with the longer wheelbase).
Check out the details in the screen shot: Duesenberg style exhaust pipes, custom hood mascot, deleted running boards, and fancy chrome rear fender guards.
