September 9, 2018 at 10:55 #60714Rik HovingKeymasterHad a fantastic Saturday, spending some time with Joon, the builder of the ’48 Ford and Peter, the owner of the car at Joon’s Custom Steel Shop Construction in Den Helder, the Netherlands. I did the initial design for Peter on the ’48 Ford Hard Top, which will be a mix of traditional Custom Restyling combines with more modern Hot Rodding styles. And now I will also be involved in the rest of the project when it comes to styling and details. Really looking forward to it.
The main job for yesterday’s gathering was to get the side window opening on the new Hard-Topped body the perfect shape. Joon already had chopped the top and started to reshape some metal for the side window openings. Together with the owner and the builder of the frame/engine the shapes on the side window opening was further modified, with the rear side window place more to the back than original intended. This left the C-pillar to narrow when viewing the top from the front 3/4.
So the plan was to create cardboard template based on line art taken from the original side view design. But since we were all at the shop, we decided to take a piece of cardboard, tape it to the top of the body so that I could sketch out the perfect side window for the car which all parties involved could approve.
So much fun to do… IĀ usually do all my design work on the computer, but working in 3D is just so much fun, being able to walk around it and see the vision I have in my head work from all angles.
We cut out the cardboard template and taped it to the body, blackened out some of the metal of the body was was “leaking” out under the cardboard and we started at it for a good amount of time. Some small adjustments were made, and a few more will follow, when Joon is going to translate the cardboard onto plywood to create the side window opening which can be used on both sides of the car.
Joon ready to held the extended rear fender in place. The original rear window will be replaced by a hand made unit, hence the mostly filled rear portion of the back of the top.
The new cardboard template in place showing the new side window shape. Tape was used to help visualize the beltline. The body above the belt line is sectioned to think down the profile of the car.
Joon marking the new forward angle of the “B-Pillar”.
Joon on the left and car owner Peter on the right holding the extended rear fender in place. The fender skirts will be flush mounted, and all hand made. The opening as seen here where the fender skirt will fit in, will be moved forward a few inches, closer to the leading edge of the rear fender.
We also talked about many other details that will be incorporated later, which will included reshaped hood opening and interior details…. more to come later.
Enjoy the beauty of Customizing
