Rik if you are looking at this I made a post and mistakenly added 2 pictures so if you could approve it I would appreciate it.
January 9, 2021 at 08:37 #69416Ian GibbonsParticipantI’m still on rust patrol.LOL
Haha, I haven’t even started that yet and there is lots.
It’s like how some people eat a meal: some eat their favorite bits first, others save the favorites for last.
In my case it was more I didn’t want my plate to fall apart while I was eating. 🙂
I got the welds ground down and the majority of the planishing done. I thought I was being smart by moving the seam around the back window closer to the window on this side to avoid all the cuts and small pieces from the other side but failed to realize that internal bracing makes is very difficult to planish out the weld where it is now. I haven’t decided if I am going to cut the brace out and planish then reinstall of just do the best I can and lead the seam. The less added work the better seems the best approach given the magnitude of the work I have to do but we will see. I still have to fill the cleco holes as well.

January 10, 2021 at 05:58 #69433TonyParticipantHey Ian, we have been shown the power of filler. You just need a big enough shovel! 🙂

Thanks Jeff!

HAHA, well I work for a filler company so I may know where to get some. 🙂
January 14, 2021 at 04:05 #69469Ian GibbonsParticipantStill slowly plugging along. The back and the drivers side has not been a lot of fun. The cut up the roof was wider than the one on the passenger side so it warped like crazy and required a really thin filler piece to weld it up. I probably should have cut a wider piece out and welded in a bigger piece but I didn’t. I cut the top out of the patch panel and bent it down to get some access to planish, sat on the packaging tray to weld, layed on the roof to reach some of it. Still lots of planishing and clean up to go but it is close and the panel is tacked back in place. I will finish welding it up tomorrow and start cleaning it up.

January 15, 2021 at 00:01 #69475Ian GibbonsParticipantHaha slowly.
I got this far before my shoulders and back decided I should take a break. I have a bit of a high spot right at the end of the small lengthwise cut into the roof (in line with the dolly) and a bit of a low spot to the right of that so I have to move some metal around a little. It’s not the most convenient place to reach so it will be a bit of a fight I fear.

These are the times when you wish you had just a little longer arms, aren’t they. The roof on my “Brule” coupe was warped all the way across, and a Port-A-Power from underneath became a Godsend!

January 17, 2021 at 23:26 #69507TorchieParticipantLooks great. I always had to paint the car roofs in the body shop because I was tall and had long arms.
Torchie.
January 22, 2021 at 01:43 #69534Ian GibbonsParticipantThe drivers side has been a bit of a fight. There was something on the inside metal of the back window that was not on the other side that is off gassing as I weld creating a real headache. I have it metal finished out close to where it needs to be but it still needs some work. I also started welding the bottom edge of the back window back onto the car and filling the relief cuts. There is no access to the back of any of these areas so it’s a little tedious trying to not get too much distortion as there is no way to planish it out. Some of the areas are just going to require some filler.

I hear ya. That’s one of the reasons I was shitting bricks putting the bottom skin on the trunk lid, after I’d put all the internals back.
It’s all looking good though, patience will pay off.
