One more piece of the puzzle in place.

April 4, 2021 at 23:05 #70437Ian GibbonsParticipantThanks again guys. I took a bit of a break this week. Had my son home for spring break so spent time with him and had some actual job work to do this week as well so haven’t made a ton of progress but got some done.
First I finished off the front part of the door pillar section I was working on previously.
April 4, 2021 at 23:07 #70438Ian GibbonsParticipantThen I started the nasty job of fixing the rust behind the brace that is on the upper section of this area. It is spot welded in so it took me a few hours to drill out about 20 tack weld and remove the brace which left me with this mess.
April 4, 2021 at 23:07 #70439Ian GibbonsParticipantSo I cut that all out which left a big hole. I braced the outside edge before I cut it out to keep some sort of strength seeing as the hood is attached there and still on the car. The inner panel was probably enough but I wasn’t sure what was left of the tack welds in the upper section so didn’t want to take any chances.
April 4, 2021 at 23:08 #70440Ian GibbonsParticipantPatched and welded it in place. Unfortunately on most of these patches I don’t have enough access to the back of the panels to clean them up enough to TIG so I have to resort to MIGing them in place. Not the cleanest work but it will do for an area no one will ever see.
Now I have to clean up the bracket and weld it back in. I have also been trying to figure out how I am going to do the outer rocker panel. I have the patterns made up for it but I need to figure out how I am going to shape it. I may have to get a rubber upper wheel for my English wheel (I tried cutting up an inner tube to use as a rubber band but it was a little bit too small for my wheel) to put the curve in it as I don’t own a slip roll but I am not sure yet so we shall see.
April 5, 2021 at 00:32 #70442TonyParticipantTedious, time consuming but important work.
It’s always fun trying to work out how to make things with no tools. Then you see someone make something with no tools and think, shit, that’s so simple, I wish I’d known that before!
The two pieces of pipe welded together with a small gap for a sheet is a neat simple ‘roller.’

I thought about that but I don’t have any so I will have to go buy some and I don’t even want to know what that will cost these days. A sheet of 18 gauge cold rolled just cost me $150.
April 5, 2021 at 02:45 #70444TonyParticipantWell there’s the thing. Not everyone has a couple of big ass lengths of large diameter tube lying about the place.
My first option here would be a metal recycler, not new. But even so, for a one off use…mmm, maybe there’s another way.
April 5, 2021 at 05:23 #70445Mild MitchParticipantIan, You are proving the old adage that the car needs to be restored before it can be customized. And doing great fab work!
I recently made a “roll” out of a scrap piece of 4″ diam. Ā x 1/2″ wall tube I had left over from another project. And some smaller tube. I have several hoods to make and got tired of improvising.

And I thought that the $86 I paid was high, Ian.
Looking good.
Depending on how big a roll you will need I’ve been known to use a empty gas cylinder as a buck to roll over. I use the taller “C”?? tank.
Keep at it.

April 11, 2021 at 05:49 #70524Ian GibbonsParticipantI ended up using the rubber inner tube on my small english wheel to roll the rockers.
April 11, 2021 at 05:51 #70525Ian GibbonsParticipantThen I worked on the front section that goes behind the fender.
April 11, 2021 at 05:52 #70526Ian GibbonsParticipantAnd with the fender back on. The angle of this picture makes the gap look a bit wonky but it is pretty close. The fender is going to require some adjustment to get every thing dialled in.
April 11, 2021 at 07:52 #70527TonyParticipantThat came out well.
