Sold New on Christmas eve in 1955 Down town Hollywood From the FELIX CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP………  My 56 has been sleeping for 23 years…… Car spent its entire life on the sun set strip and owned by Jean Juliet who was a French Allied Solider who was bought to America during WW2 to decipher German Blue Prints……. After the war he bought alot of the Motels on Hollywood’s sun set strip Thus earning him a pretty penny and eventually buying a huge mansion in the

” BEL – AIR ESTATE ” In 1998 my 57 Chevrolet was stolen and never recovered. So to replace it i bought this 1 owner 1956 Chevrolet 2 door hard top coupe. Mr Juliet who was a sticker for keeping things in order kept every single penny spent on the car……

She is quite the tomato having all kinds of people in the Hollywood and greater area work on her over the years……

From Barris Kustoms doing a touch up in the 1960’s from small accident and adding some lead here and there… Wished ol George Barris was still around to see out again. To Joe’s Auto Upholstery  who did ” CARSON STYLE TOPS & GLASS “doing the interior several times……To Earl SCHEIB of 9158 w Olympic Bvld Beverly Hills  doing some some touch up paint work here and there…….!!!

I became friends with Mr Juliet and would visit his mansion to look at the car and drink Soda water with a straw …..And i was not allowed to visit there unless I had a long sleeve shirt covering my tattoos…..!!!

This was an era when this kind of expectations of how you looked and carried your self  during the 1990’s when Los Angeles was at its peek of drug – Street Gangs and rap music…..

After some time I  was allowed to buy the car as this was also a time of not much internet and there was no such thing as DAN CHUCK RE POP PARTS…….!!

So after my 1956 Chevrolet named ” JULIET ”  has been sleeping for 23 years I have finally been able to take her out of hyphenation and begin to  getting her in tip top shape……

With her factory ordered 1956 265 v8 Corvette optioned engine Over the years she was mostly stock with some of the fads added or done during the period of late 50’s and 1960’s.

WHATS IN STALL FOR THIS  1956 CHEVROLET…???????……….

Well getting her back to bare metal to iron out all of the wrinkles  a reversed KOLOR paint job in original kolors Because i have always disliked the huge amount of yellow….. Using HOUSE OF KOLOR It will be all black with a yellow flash and wheels or just a yellow roof..??? A paint job approved by LARRY WATSON   for sure…!!! The wet it out king …!!! Larry’s famous saying …. With his crazy bead and  movie director look , I always felt he was referring to some porno.

Not sure yet but the kolor is going to be reversed…….  Lowe rd as low as she can be with rear wheel skirts to make her look like she is standing still while moving…….  Keeping the Barris lead repairs / And Vintage Joe’s Upholstery…… Pumped up 265 V8 corvette 2×4 W.C.F.B CARTERS Carbs with deep groove SEBRING racing generator pulley and water pump pulley……. 9 O’clock 12 O’clock 56 fuel pump/ solid lifters/ duntuv cam with power pac double match stick corvette heads…..9 finned corvette valve covers / dual point diz-tributor.

Not many know that in 1956 you could get the chassis as a  “SPACE FRAME ” Meaning its a 1 piece chassis  of boxed type and as it gets to the rear wheel arches its done in 3 bits seem welded…… This frame is 90 pounds liter then the reg ” C ” channel frame….

Body work smooth as silk With wrap around accessory bumpers…….. The hood mascot will be deleted from the hood with a nice peak…… Will be a mild kustom  keeping to the true L.A  style…..

Most of the work will be in the body sorting out the damage as she has had a shunt on the driver quarter with a fairly good re pair with out the panel being cut off and re placed. ….. As it is a 42,000 Mile car to begin with, I will leave the dash and do some pin stripes……………..

Was lucky enough To have some of the Movie stars from

” AMERICAN GRAFFITI ” To sign the door panels ……. Especially going for a cruz back in the day in 1990’s  with Bo hopkins   leader of the ” PHARAOHS ” and Joe Padilla…..  and Candice Clark…. Debbie….

R.I.P   BO HOPKINS    2022 You will be missed…..!

Hope to get it all in etch soon and work on it in between  several other kustoms I am doing and several Indian Motorcycles including a 1920 scout.

Might even give it a chop slightly in the roof…….

Like Chuck Boy from Victorville Ca. Like his old 1956 Buick 2 door coupe that was sadly  lost in the California bush fires….. Sporting that rare ” BARRIS TRIM ” Lucky i had a spare set tucked away just in case we lost a set…!!!  0115131923

DIPPING YOUR SHEET METAL IN ACID AND HAVING IT ACID WASHED…………..

Just an update about having your parts washed in caustic acid…………

The acid batch guys who dip cars and panels all of you would of seen clam you can paint over the the Phosphoric acid they use to protect the sheet metal or car body……..This is not the case……

    Facts…….

It is between the sheet metal and paint…. And yes you can paint on it BUT NO its a bad start to a paint job……..!!

Solution……….!!      How to solve this issue……………

Well after i had my entire front clip dipped and washed in acid….At a cost of $2300

There is still a huge amount of work to get it to my level of acceptance…….. Witch was about another $2500 of costs I would charge in my shop to complete the job…….

So I have a total of nearly $5000 alone in my font clip even tho I did the other half of the work…

After getting back the entire front clip ……It was then dipped in my Molasses bath to remove the Dried Phosphoric acid……..   The tin was removed and scrubbed with a brown 320 pad and dish soap to remove the grey sludge……

Once this is done it wants to flash rust again……The tin was hung in a paint booth and sprayed with Phosphoric acid to get into all the spot welds / tab welded washers / and double panels.

Once you do this YOU DO NOT ALLOW THE ACID TO DRY……!! While its wet for 20 minits ……

The only way to remove the Phosphoric acid is with ” MENTHOLATED SPRITES ”   ……!!! NOTHING ELSE WILL REMOVE IT…..!! NOT THINNERS / NO WAX AND GREASE…..!!!

The paint gun was used to spray off the acid as it turns to soft gel like glue……

Using the guns pressure this makes it alot ezy to do in the time frame and manage…..

Once all removed the tin will go very cold and some small bits will want to flash rust again……

Waht you do now is use a micro finder cloth to wipe on a tiny amount of Phosphoric  acid agasin just on the spots were it flash rusts…….

Then you use another micro fiber cloth with ” MENTHOLATED SPIRITS ”  To wipe it off……

So your essentially working your way down little by little to were the tin is look as if it was stamped and pressed today    !!!!!

Then using Black etch with ZINK PHOSPHATE in it witch is the equivalent to lead based primers……

I used a syringe to squirt the etch into the parts that were spot welded  and the paint gun can not get into even with very low pressure……….

After giving it several coats of this black etch with is in actual fact the very same etch that was under the original paint…. Yes that is 1000% correct……..Alls they did in the factory was etch the body in black etch no primer and painted the car with the exception of some parts sprayed in red oxide………

    Follow through analysis………..

Well the entire process was very long / and each stage could not be skipped or any short cuts could be taken  ……!!

The process even tho the acid washers / dippers did the ezy aprt ( DIP IT / TAKE MY MONEY / SPRAY CRAP LOADS OF ACID ALL OVER IT /   ……. Tho I did the hardest and technical side

It was a costly process that took the best part of 3 months due to time frame of allowing washing to be done and cleaning …………. It has still cost me $5000 in total…..

    END result………….

Well the entire front clip looks like it was just pressed yesterday and you would think it was all new , As long as your tin is not rusted out…..!!!

Even tho it is all in black etch it looks factory tho it will get a coat of G.M.H back……..

SPECIAL NOTES TO REMEMBER…. If you are going to do this process…………

If you intend to do this process be aware the guys at the acid washers are all brain dead……!!!

Little / no safety equipment meaning gas masks and special splash aprons……..This means you need to take control of your parts……

If you have fenders these guy will dip it even with spot welded inners ……

I had to drill my inners off and take the brackets that give the panel strength…. This making them prone to damage if twisted……….. They do not care about what they can not see…..

THINGS TO DO AND NOT DO…………

Do not leave your parts with them long….Your things will get damaged……

Do not allow them to use a pressure washer if the guy will bed your parts with the pressure washer…

Remove your inners and anything  that is spot welded so it can be painted and then re spot welded.

Do not let your panels get left sitting out of the acid wash   as the oxygen will react and eat lines into your tin ware…..

This happened to my 56 fenders as they sat the headlite end upside down in 6 inches of acid and i have a permanent line across my fender witch will now need to be lead wiped ……… causing a perfect fender to now have body work done to correct it……..

    Hope this  information is helpful

    any questions please ask me….
