Aw Rik, you made me go back and look at mine.. Perhaps the slant of the B pillar helped with the curvature on it, but I see what you mean regarding a somewhat “flat” line at the window top. It looks in the picture as though the driver’s side (yet to be addressed) has a bit more arc than the pass. side? Keep cuttin’ and gluein’ Grant, it’s looking smart!

When you slant the ‘B’ pillar you then can have issues with the shape you want for the quarter window . It depends on the look your trying to achieve and how much compromise you have to make to get it.
November 5, 2017 at 14:57 #54732James DParticipantThis sort of thing is what i was refering to. It creates a flowing teardrop shape that incorporates the quarter window, instead of just (in the worst examples) mail slots.
Though i realise it may not be entirely traditional, and so very much a matter of what the builder is actually trying to achieve.
November 5, 2017 at 23:32 #54751TonyParticipantAhh, drawings.
A lot has to do with the length of the original doors in the first place. Shorter doors tend to have more curve.
November 6, 2017 at 06:50 #54766GrantMacleanParticipantThanks again for the replies.
So Yeah, the tops of the doors… as mentioned they are going to look flatter the more the car is chopped. I don’t believe you could put any more arch into the frame without making the roof look funny. You have two options, chop less out of the A pillars and have it sloping back heaps which I think would look funny, or slant the B pillar.
In some cases when you slant the B pillar, depending on how much you slant it- you can make the window shape look funny. The reason why is because (in my opinion and on this body style) the window frame should always finish lower than the center of the frame. If this is not done it can give the illusion that more is chopped out of the front making it look raked. This is not always the case but I see it alot on 49-50 merc chops too.
Personally I much prefer a straight pillar chop on most body styles. I know a lot of people disagree but That’s just me.
As for that drawing that James D posted. I think it looks absolutely wonderful. But I’m not sure it would work with my body style. Especially the 42-8 with the flatter fenders, and being a merc with a longer front end. I think that chop suits the roundedness of the 3o-40 perfectly.
Also, I think if you were to put more crow into the roof you would have to shorten the rear quarter window and move the rear window forward. Which personally I really don’t like on these cars. The decklid has enough of a flat spot on the top without making it bigger. They start to look like an Aussie ute.
When it comes to chopping this body style there will always be compromise, especially the more you take out.
It’s just a matter of finding what compromise you are willing to live with. For me, I’d rather have the long flat door top than sacrifice something else.
Dave, you are correct in saying that the right hand door frame is flatter than the left in that photo. I noticed it while I was going and fixed it up. I will double check the door frame shape when I get a better piece of cardoard. The one I was using was pretty hagard but I’m sure the door frames are very close to being the same now.
I will get a measurement of that door height when I get back from holidays.
November 7, 2017 at 04:21 #54781GrantMacleanParticipantDave, just got back from holidays and measured my door. At the center, the window height is 7 3/4″.
November 7, 2017 at 06:55 #54782Dave (a.k.a. rodncustomdreams)ParticipantThanks for that Grant! I was curious as to how our chops compare.. Now I have some measuring to do just to see.

Grant, I just came in from measuring mine @ 7 1/2″. I thought they looked pretty much the same!
I remember a story of Marcia Campbell and her friends being stuck in her car with a dead battery holding the doors shut and how no one could squeeze through the window!! ..Seems about right! 😉

November 25, 2017 at 22:22 #55115GrantMacleanParticipantSo, a little update on the merc. I’ve been going flat out over the last two days to try and get it ready to sell. It still needs a bunch of work on the chop but I don’t want to burn any more time on it. I’ve got a 41 to finish and a 36 to start.
November 26, 2017 at 01:44 #55117TonyParticipantSome lucky person is going to get a big head start with the proportions spot-on! I hope they appreciate it.
December 20, 2017 at 07:21 #55531TalbotParticipantGreat work right there. Loving’ the 41 (OK I’m biassed) More power to you!
December 20, 2017 at 09:55 #55535TinwolfParticipantThat looks beautiful , long front end and symmetrical door widow opening , flowing rear sidewindow opening and a nice sweep the end of the roof , standing ovation . Both Jonny Zaro Merc and Matranga Merc seems to have chopped rear window before the re-enter into the top but I never seen that on a -41-48 Ford / Merc rear window , possibly because it has a slight shape to it and being impossible to cut but it be interesting to see .
Still this is one of the few chopped -41-48 Ford / Mercs that has the proportions spot on !

“Had some paint left over from the Chevy so I thought I would make this look a little better so I can at least drive it around while I wait to work on it. It’s so rough but for a couple of hours work I figure it’s worth doing.”
