After the Jim Street Golden Sahara II has been auctioned at the Mecum Indianapolis Auctions if became part of the Klairmont Kollections in Chicago. Larry Klairmont, the new owner originally planned to have work done on the car to be able to display it in his museum. Get some of the electronics up and running again, and then display it along side the VooDoo Larry Sahara. But later it was decided to do a full Restoration on the Golden Sahara and get it back to how the car looked around 1961.Ā  Lucky “E” Garage and VooDoo Larry will be in charge of the tremendous task of the restoration.

Larry and Lucky “E” Garage have been sharing some photos, some great detail photos prior the restoration. And Larry has already been starting the job by getting the huge fender skirts back in shape.

We will be sharing as much of the restoration here on the Custom Car Chronicle as we can… so better Bookmark this thread.

Larry also send some detail photos of the paint on the Golden Sahara. We are still trying to figure out if the yellow/gold color on the body is turned yellow clear, which I think it is, or if it is actual gold paint.

    From VooDoo Larry…

“Can’t believe how elaborate the skirts are on the GSII, Jeffery Hansen and his guys pulled the skirt off the car and brought to my shop were they pulled about 400 small brass covered wooden cubes (edit 1957 Chrysler radio push buttons) from the skirt so I can straighten the skirt out by hammer n dollie then some time in the wheel.. Then I decided to polish one of the cubes out. They shine up beautifully. You can see the difference in the pics.. Just think there about 1500 of them on the car. Oh boy. The skirt will get a full polish then candy gold over and assemble all cubes back on. Very tedious job. Lots more to come my friends. Stay tuned VooDoo”

And the side panels which are solid brass from GSII also.. Thank you Jeff for bringing them by after pulling the rest of the cubes off…. Lots .more to come my friends. VooDoo

A bit more progress on the Golden Sahara from Lucky ā€œEā€ Garage.

The hammer is used to be able to remove the wood inside from the actual dash-knobs.

Well there seems to be some controversy brewing with this restoration on Instagram. Apparently the car has or is being pulled from Lucky E Garage (under what sounds like some dubious assertions by the owner) and is now being restored by Speak Easy Customs. Drama just seems to follow this car around.

Yes Ian… LOTS of Drama. On Instagram as well as as On Facebook. Not worthy to the car at all.

Not sure what is going on, different stories are being told by all involved…

3 days ago on Sept 24th this was announced on Speak Easy Customs Instagram

speakeasycustoms It’s official!Ā @klairmont_kollectionsĀ has awarded Speakeasy the full restoration of the Golden Sahara II. Work has already begun! We will be posting more in the next few days, but we are honored to have this job and want to say thanks to Larry Klairmont for this opportunity!!”

“A little before and after on this front fender piece. Each hole on this would be a cube when assembled, the man hours that will go into this is crazy! Crazy but a whole lot of fun too.”

Not surprised about the “Controversy”. Under the best conditions (Being that the OG builder/owner did the restoration) this car is gong to be a tough restoration.

Most all is custom, hand fabricated parts made from materials that, in some cases’s no longer exist or cant be properly identified. There isn’t even a consensus as to the true color of the paint.

My hope is that what ever happens this car is brought back too as close as possible as it was in it’s glory days and doesn’t get stuck in the “Switch shops” dance that happens all too frequently. That’s how irreplaceable parts get lost.

I have been in touch with the people that now have the Golden Sahara in their shop, and they have started to take the car apart.

But sadly (for us) they had to sign a non-disclosure agreement because the people from the museum are working on and are filming a documentary about the Golden Sahara and the restoration process.

It looks like there will be no new updating pictures or info on the restoration until it is all done, and the documentary has been released.
