Gene Winfield has been working on restoring the Jade Idol back into its original version for its new owner for a couple of month. And yesterday it was time to get the new Winfield trademark fade paint-job started.
Thanks to Jimmy Severino and Matchstick for sharing these photos of this historic Custom Car event. These photos were taken when Gene was almost done, but a few more colors and hues still need to be added to the paint. Hopefully we can show more in the next couple of days.t

Looks like mine as well Ian. I think that they all look alike.:)
It just adds to the cars history that Mr Winfield is painting it again.
I often wonder what the original buiders think when they get to go back and work on something that they built 50 years prior.
I painted more then a few cars without a respirator, but never while in a booth. And whats with the propane tanks and what looks like a infrared heater? Looks like I have been doing it wrong all these years.:)
Can’t wait to see it finished and all together.

March 26, 2018 at 16:04 #57650DavidParticipantI’m glad to see Gene got to do it and that the fades go all the way back to the original dark shades. I called Gene’s shop and nearly begged the guy that answered the phone that they film the entire process of Gene painting the car as well as have him explain the steps and what he’s doing. For him to be able to repaint the same car that made his fade paint jobs famous is history in itself, but at nearly 91, I doubt there are very many authentic Gene Winfield fades yet to come. He has been so generous to share so much of his knowledge over the years with his metal working classes, chop sessions at shows and what not. He hasn’t made a video or done a class on fade paint yet that I know of, and what a shame it would be if he didn’t pass on the thing he’s know for most. I said all this to the guy on the phone…and to Gene as well when I saw him in Detroit a few weeks ago. Both said it was a great idea, and that they would do it. I hope they did. What a treat it would be to watch the master from start to finish.

April 19, 2018 at 17:35 #58276KingKustomsParticipantThis is awesome…his fade paint jobs look killer on a car with this type of restyling. It really accentuates the modifications. Will it be at WCK Santa Maria?
