Ok I have been called a couple things when it has to do with customs. The pickiest guy in the world, a traditional nazi and im sure there are more.Well I don’t know if this falls in to that category or not but….. I was wondering how many of you guys have your Appletons working ? I know they are a pain but I sure do like the way they look when they are lit up. I know they don’t get used very often but I have always loved spotlights.
Plus it shuts people up when they say ” why would you mount non working spotlights on your car. ”January 16, 2014 at 02:54 #9460Ian GibbonsParticipantJeff you are such a hard ass π . I am only putting one on my truck and hope to have it functioning if it is legal here.
January 16, 2014 at 03:01 #9461Jeff NepplParticipantCome on man….. π I didn’t mean it to sound tough. Im just curious about others because some of my friends thought I was nuts for having em work .
January 16, 2014 at 03:10 #9462Ian GibbonsParticipantHAHA just kidding. I can’t imagine thinking it was nuts to have them working it’s not like it is a big production to run power to them.
January 16, 2014 at 03:19 #9463Jeff NepplParticipantI think its not a big deal to guys who are into customs but guys that aren’t really into sleds heavy…… then it does seem weird to them.
My Grandfather who was in the C.C. Prowlers of Fullerton in the mid to later 50s said everybody would go crazy with their spotlights at the drive in . They would shine up on the screen before the movie started. He had a 1950 custom chevy.
January 16, 2014 at 03:42 #9464Curt IseliParticipantPlus it shuts people up when they say β why would you mount non working spotlights on your car. β
I think you’re hanging around with the wrong people. Why would you chop away half your visibility, hide the door opening mechanism, slam away every bit of ground clearance, replace one 60 year old motor with another 60 year old motor, or do any of the other things a sane person would see as completely ludicrous? Oh, yeah…because it looks goood.
That said, I do think it’s pretty neat that on top of everything else on your car (the bitchin’ chop, killer stance, and totally insane Cad mill), it’s pretty neat that your Appletons work, too.
January 16, 2014 at 04:07 #9465Jeff NepplParticipantWow, Curt those are some very nice compliments and I appreciate that especially coming from somebody who knows customs, thank you. I wish some of the people you work with felt that way ;). Anyway…. I didn’t post those pics for bragging ,I really am curious about these expensive custom accessories that we all go crazy for. I searched for a good pair for years before I stepped up. Of coarse that was before I discovered the internet. (2005) π
January 16, 2014 at 04:53 #9466Ron BrooksParticipantHeres mine Jeff …… I remember going to the drive-in movies as a kid and they had a game at intermission where a little elf would dart all over the screen, and the people with spotlights would try to tag it with their light beam.
January 16, 2014 at 07:20 #9474Rik HovingKeymasterI think working Spotlights is like the icing on the cake. Especially these days.
Customs is all about looks. A lot of customs are never shown with the hood open. Yes there is an engine, and yes it works, but on a lot of customs the engine does not look pretty, or not as pretty as on most Hot Rods. But on those customs that have these wonderfully detailed engines…. Like on yours Jeff … that will bring the car to a whole new level.
Same goes for the spotlights, yes its about the looks, the way they are mounted, the way they are turned that will make the whole package work or not. And if on top of that all these spotlights can be switched on.. then you have that special feeling. I guess a feeling that will hush down a crowd at night when the light from the spotlights glows on the hood of the car, or chases another one on the big screen…Enjoy the beauty of Customizing

Yes Ron,that is exactly what my grandpa said they would do at the drive-in. He also said they would play tag on the big screen chasing each others light beam. It’s great to see your lights working Ron. Thanks for sharing the pics and the story.
January 17, 2014 at 19:40 #9522Dave (a.k.a. rodncustomdreams)ParticipantMy car came with dummies, and I just cannot afford a nice set of authentic Appletons; but I have acquired a matched set of Guide S16s which have a nice shape to them. I never considered mounting them and not having them work – otherwise I might just as well leave the dummies in place! As Rik says, it’s just one more detail that makes all the difference between a very nice custom and a truly great one!

January 19, 2014 at 07:38 #9530Jeff NepplParticipantCome on guys…… 2 cars out of all the people on the chronicle pages ? Well I guess them working isn’t important. π
January 24, 2014 at 09:18 #9651Manuel ReyesParticipantHey Jeff,
After restoring my Appleton’s with all new chrome / wiring / mounting, I’m going the
extra 175 yards in order to get them to work.
I was super careful, when re-assembling them in order that all the contacts were done
as perfect as humanly possible. Cause, I’m not blowing them apart again.
Onward Christian Soldiers.Keep ’em lit.
Manuel ReyesJanuary 28, 2014 at 07:14 #9709Jeff NepplParticipantManuel….. glad to hear it. Especially on such a great looking car like yours. 175 yards is right,I totally can see why most of em don’t work . I started the thread cause I was curious to see if most worked or not.
February 24, 2014 at 00:59 #10563Manuel ReyesParticipantHi Jeff,
Revisiting the forum and your post and thought I’d add to my original reply
by actually showing a photo of the spots on my ’36 Ford while I was fitting them
before painting car. Again, they will work.Keep the faith,
Manuel ReyesAttachments:
