Here are two more snapshots i‘ve found. A 1938 Ford with chopped and raked windshield and an padded top:

9A2ABCD0-D2CA-4CA9-B0CB-7E29B520632896C14783-68AB-437B-A030-E29E748852D4BCA6819A-7C7E-490C-9E1D-6DADD99DDC5E5D9E9EA8-4AAE-4B1E-B9C9-511F8105BE15The hubcap seems to be a „propeller“ hubcap without the propeller, in the middle seems to be the mounting hole:

    Ooooh… I like that one.
That raked windshield makes the car look much younger.

    Very nice, very nice.

Yes! That top looks really sporty yet still very classy.

One more find…, this postcard of Alturas seems to be from the mid-fifties (newest car i can spot is the 55 Pontiac), but i bet the chopped 40 Ford convertible on the right was built in the 40s. I wonder if the owner was from northern california or if he was on a journey and just driving through on the day the photo was taken. Maybe the owner is one of the people beside the car? Or are they just admiring the Ford?

…the license plate of the Ford looks like it is a black 51/55 California plate, so together with the 55 Pontiac, the photo is probably taken 1955.

I‘ve stumbled over these two photos of an mildly customized 36 Ford Sedan on ebay, the seller has hundreds of old photos with all kind of motifs. Unfortunately these photos are badly cropped but i still find them very interesting. It seems the 36 Ford Sedan was first updated in the late Forties with Solid hood sides, fender skirts, flipper hubcaps and spotlights:

3C577A30-4513-4991-8228-CCD57B599C4DThe second photo is taken later and shows the Ford further updated. A bull nose, antenna, 41 Ford bumpers with 49 Chevrolet license guard, white wall tires in the front and what seems to be Lyons hubcaps. The license plate looks like a 51 California plate. Maybe some of the modifications were already there in the first picture but are out of sight:

    DFEC1E52-2A51-4DA5-A4A5-03FC3B05A9DD
Also barely visible are some letters in the windshield:

7AC3D24B-8349-4C82-9D27-9E9DD4211FF4It took me a while to figure out what it said, after a while i thought the first word could be „Saint“, so i serached google for a city in California beginning with „Saint“, i found just a „Saint Mary‘s College“ in North California in Moraga near Oakland. Hm…, maybe i thought. Maybe not. Next i looked at all other auctions from the seller, and, i found two pictures with college students. One of them wore a College Letter Jacket with the letters S and M, …bingo! These must be friends of the owner of the Ford, or maybe he is one of them:

935F48AA-BE76-48ED-9CC9-8281B26D17F3F62F8130-29CF-4A33-A5DD-8EA0C46134CBMust be some sort of celebration.

Then i searched the internet further for Saint Mary‘s college and found an old decal and an program for an football match:

3CACAE0A-6AD4-466E-B8F3-AA76DE2E63DAF9A1F4E4-FAB0-471A-99EE-85A203A340D1So that 36 Ford sedan was owned by an college student of Saint Mary‘s college in Moraga, California from about the late forties to the early fifties.

Time for some more finds, this time some ads from the Program for the 1949 Hot Rod Exposition:

65DAD40C-A62F-4E46-B744-7BBB08CE2E554E9D65BB-C813-4C87-9545-866CA4893ABA08F15FE4-1519-441F-858A-29B85F719D87D29D5B0A-1115-4513-A305-8A3A7408DC3581D328F0-E73F-450C-B7AE-A6DDAF62F0AAAnd there‘s a page with speed shop addresses with a short „Custom Body Work“ section where just Barris and Summers are mentioned. I wonder why the Ayalas haven‘t advertised, first because the „House of Chrome“ is on their property and has an ad in the Program, and second, because Gil was also a Hot Rodder.

No info on this ’36 Ford Phaeton.
Looks to be done in the mid 1940’s.

This photo was on ebay some time ago:

D2A9051A-9CE9-48B4-AA7B-4EC0B44E9BFAI haven‘t seen 41 Buick trim used on hood sides before (better said, below the hood in this case). Four Buick spears and the flipper hubcaps are a small fortune nowadays…
