KeymasterI have been gathering some photos of David Wolk’s really beautiful 1950 Mercury custom for a few weeks. Found some on facebook and other on a few Flickr accounts.
David recently posted a thread on how he did the Cadillac Sombrero hubcaps on his Mercury, this subtile and clever technique tells a bit about how the rest of the Mercury is done. All very subtile and very stylish.
I really like the grille David created for his Mercury, 1951 Mercury accessory bumper guards welded together and combined with an 1951 Ford grille insert. But also the flush skirts and subtile rounded corners on the hood and trunk are really nice details.Perhaps you can share some more details on the Merc David…

Look at the subtile rounded trunk corners, the flush skirts and the use of the Hudson taillights.
A close look at the grille, thanks to Stray Kat Kustoms photos
And inside there is another 1951 Ford grille section… details.

ParticipantNice build, High class.
Lot of “small” detail´s on this, many customtrics looks like they where there from the factory.September 2, 2015 at 04:43 #29654David Wolk
ParticipantI’ve been on vacation the past week without access to the internet and I just saw Rik’s posting.
Thanks Rik and everyone for the positive comments.I just finished the Merc a couple months ago. We’ve put about 1000 miles on it so far.
To provide a few details about the merc. This is the 1st custom I’ve ever put skirts and spotlights on. My goal was to build a car that could have been built in the early 50’s but to stretch a few boundaries. I extended the headlights forward about an inch so the fenders slope back to the Desoto pan. The over ride bumper guards are 1952 Packard modified to fit between the Merc uprights. We modified the Hudson tail light bezels to fit the Merc body before casting new brass bezels. The paint is a custom mix color. Thanks to my wife and my brother after many spray samples the perfect color was selected.
The dash is a modified ’48 Cadillac with a custom art deco speaker grille. I wanted the dash to be the focal point of the car. The steering column is an automatic ’51 Merc that was chrome plated.I’ll add a few more of Mickey’s (Stray Kat Kustoms) photos. His photos look better than any I’ve taken so far.

KeymasterThanks for the extra info David.
I had not seen the dash yet… or perhaps I had, but did not realize it was in your car. I really love the look of that. Very nice.
I had not spotted the forward angled front section of the front fenders… I knew I like the shape of it, but did not look god enough to noticed that. Very nice.Do you have any progress photo… Would love to see more details.
Thanks

KeymasterThank you for the in progress photos of the headlights and splash pan David.
I really like the way both look, subtile touches, lots of work, but the result is just amazing.

ParticipantHere are a few random photos.
One more shot of the front, just after painting.
The Hudson tail light bezels are cast brass. We test fit the original Hudson bezels then had to grind areas and build up other areas to fit the Merc body properly. Then used them as molds to have new cast brass bezels made.
We made custom side window trim out of ¼ x ½ flat bar steel to eliminate having trim clips like on the original stainless trim. I’ve see it done in brass but after a few attempts we were more comfortable using steel.
We made the art deco dash speaker grille using 3/16 flat steel, and mesh aluminum.
