“Seems like I had a lot of people wanting to see how I would make the door open. Well had an idea before I started this and today I did a proof of concept. Or in knuckle dragger terms a mock-up anyways it’s a lot like a fleet line Chevy on the door portion I will do a bigger step down for more room on the door portion for more clearance but this I just stepped on the #mitlerbeadroller it’s what I had. I may change the gap line it can go farther forward that just makes room as farther in front of the hinge pivot the line is the faster the door part gets away from the fender but this is the minimum it can be. Guess what it works and door goes full open the cleco at the top hits in the video but that’s full open. I wonder how much money GM spent engineering the fleeltline doors? This took me about 4 hours and was worth it now I have a roadmap for the real parts. In the last pics you can see the foam mock-up on the floor I did the foam to get a real look at the fenders on the car but there’s a key part to how I did it… the 2” foam parts are glued together with spray foam at every 8” section I have a 1” piece that is screwed to the 2” stuff those 1” parts now are my patterns for the wood stations on my buck 8” apart is plenty of information and if I want more stations at any points I can cut them out of the bonded foam sections. There’s your tip for the day. Btw I really don’t know what I’m doing I’m just winging it.”
“I wanted that coach built look with European influence and they were definitely doing hardtops and long fast fenders there is a book I have of Lincoln’s and the hand made coach built ones are amazing and really I’m trying to just not make it look like a big VW Bug :-)”

“Well that’s glued in. Not without a struggle to weld my sail panel I English wheeled into the stamped roof. More often than not there can be issues with that something about the stamped panel wants to act weird n move as it required the whole panel to hold its shape and I cut some of that out in this case after probably over planishing on my part I ended up with a high spot. So… I worked my way out of that mess I busted out my trusty shrinking disc this disc is one I helped Jeff Spence Kustoms Develop it’s the only smooth disc (not fluted) on the market that is spun Stainless not stamped and it runs very straight and smooth also it has a big radius on the edge to get in reverse panel spots. I was never sold on shrinking discs until a couple years ago now I’m I can’t live without one and it’s the ticket with something that needs to be shrunk esp oil can areas also it’s a great way to average out tension in a panel in weld areas hit up Jeff if you need one he also spins headlight and taillight rings.”

“Working on pancaking the trunk lid I hate to give away what I do on sedan trunks but I hate seeing people run a sawzall through the skin and inner structure even more so here ya go. This is just rough n tacked and gap is still jacked but there’s some pics of the inner my advice make the inner work and that was a mess took some work to get it like that but the original parts with work fit I then tweak the skin to fit won’t say how much I pancakes that but if you go to the last pic the spare tire will not fit anymore it almost hits the inner so that thing is gone.”

1937 Zephyr chopped by Metal magician Gary Howard after a design I did many years ago.
Gary chopped the top, sectioned the door window frames and sectioned to trunk to get it all in proportions. Beautiful paint by KC’s Paint Shop and now back at the Austin Speed Shop who did all the rest of the car and who are putting it all back together.
Really looking forward to see this one getting finished.

February 9, 2019 at 16:22 #62795Rik HovingKeymasterAnother interesting project at Hollywood Hot rods is this 1956 Plymouth Wagon.I’m not sure if the end result will be CCC-Proof, but the work on the chop sure is and it shows some really interesting subtitle touches and a neat technique on the jig for the top to be pancaked one inch. Another Eric Black Design coming to live.
