“Crude and effective just like me. Made a lil hammer form and knocked out the corner recycling the old corner was not an option it was huge look at last picture only used the form, a wood mallet, high radius hammer and a ball bearing that’s welded to a handle theres a pic of that in there with a chasing hammer and a lil heat from a torch.”

“Another crude and simple trick. Ever see Big ass gaps around windows hardtop or post car? Yea that’s because they didn’t do this. The A pillar needs to be at same angle as the B pillar with respect to where the glass sits outside does not matter it needs to be what it needs to be also the B pillar needs to flat to the C pillar where the glass goes. Usually the C pillar is too far in when you chop the car that’s why we cut up in the roof and spread the roof when doing a sail panel. But it still all needs to be checked.

I start with card stock then transfer that pattern to 1/2” mdf it gets put in the hole. I pen line where the window opening is pull it out drill 1/8” holes above that line at top and below at the bottom then it goes back in. I then use self tapping screws to lock the wood flat in the opening on this car yup looked flat but wasn’t it showed me the door top sections needed work. I then do this on the back 1/4 window area same process. On that area this car had a 1/4 window and a fixed window behind that at a different angle which would a be a gap.

I took a pic of it in there look for it. For now I just cut it. This being a hardtop I am also able to now make the openings line up so glass will line up. The angle of the posts and basically the glass is called tumblehome if ya ever took the Winfield class he covers this. Also on all cars the door glass is at a different angle than the 1/4 window doesn’t matter hardtop or post car this is a great way to identify problems and solve em. This pattern now is not done I put tape on to represent the chrome glass frames and see how that looks.

Now that wood pattern ain’t done yet it will be used for welding this up and will be removed to do the other side. Here’s the  key to that pen line the opening on this side then drill 1/16 holes on the pen line at a reasonable spacing more in corners n curves now the other side of this wood has a bunch of holes connect the dots w a pen that pattern is now used for to make the window areas and door tops exactly the same side to side that’s your tip of the day.”

“Tuned in the drivers side sail panel got it looking good made a grid used my #38 sweep on the highlight line then made sweeps for the perpendicular curves lettered them A-C with the shrinker went to the other side made the pen grid in the same spots using my trusty tape measure yea I use one of those put the B sweep on for example and yea the highlight line was about correct but it was too flat above n below that line see the gap in the pic? Went back to the English wheel worked on the panel till it was about right n that’s how I make my sides the same there’s your tip for the day.”

I like the idea of the fadeaways curving  instead of going straight into the rear fender. I can picture it mimicking the curve of the roof, but reversed (if that makes any sense).

“I’ll just stick that there n marinate on it while I weld up stuff on the back. Don’t know if people will like it or hate it really doesn’t matter I’m just trying to please myself and the owner and he’s pretty much given me free run to do as I please which I so appreciate!! At the end of the day good or bad at least I had some vision and the balls to really restyle a Zephyr”.

    Oh…well, he’s doing his thing.

I can see making the front fenders a little longer, maybe taking them halfway across the door.  I’m almost never a fan of fadeaways anyhow, so i should probably shut up.
