Neil says “Dave, if you can find me a new quarter to replace this rusty bit and perhaps while you are magically unearthing that maybe you could scare up a new trunk floor and a few fenders, doors and anything else you can find”. Gulp!
This part for sure needs replacing:
And all of this too I suppose..
No problem..!?!

August 1, 2017 at 13:50 #52506kustomlandParticipantDave your car looks awesome in bare metal…..!!!
And at least you have hammer and dollies to work on yours dave ……!!
Was that a little ” GOLD ” looking stuff in one of those repairs ??? Been brazed welded..??? My faver falve…!!! I am glad you have this car and are going to return it back to more tradish style…..
I just did a quarter like yours and it took me forever to braze but I filled it all and then hit it with a 120 flapper disk. Smoothed out just fine, but I had bucket of water with 2 wet cotton cloths and folded them nice and had them stick to the top edge of the quarter panel and they kept the heat off the paint , I was even able to not burn the original paint on the car even tho I was braze welding so close to the edge of the body.
Can hardly wait to see what kolor you choose this time around…!!!

August 1, 2017 at 19:17 #52507Mild MitchParticipantThis is Bitchin! I love your car. And I’m on board with David and everyone else here. It is fun to see what was below the surface and the whole archaeologic aspect of the original work. Plastic filler is our friend, lol.
That said, I’m glad our sensibilities have progressed regarding the level of craftsmanship these days! I have worked with cars in similar condition too. The owner had bought it as a “fresh build, buy a pro shop”. He started to pick at some cracked filler, things got worse from there. INCHES of filler over collapsed and shrunk seams in the chopped top, and trunk lid… We fixed it.
I’m glad to see you getting to fix this and make things right. Look forward to further installments!

I am fortunate to have a circle of friends who are skilled at things I have no ability for, as well as friends who are terrific resources of vintage tin!
Long time buddy John had at one time a used parts store and who now has retired to an acreage of old cars for the picking! There were several ’46 to ’48 sedans with various solid panels we could cannibalize for needed sheet metal.
Retrieving an inner quarter panel:
Found a few solid rear fenders on this trip as well:
While we were pickin’ Neil and his right hand guy Lorne were beginning to fab some patch panels for this section:

August 2, 2017 at 02:25 #52510Dave (a.k.a. rodncustomdreams)ParticipantBack to John’s a few days later on the search for more useable bits and to find a useable driver’s side rear gravel pan portion for Barry Mazza’s project. I did manage to find a mangled piece which Neil straightened so we could send it off to Florida. That same sedan had what looked, at first glance, like a disgusting trunk floor..
But, after moving the filth I was shocked (and pleased!) to find pristine metal!! Get that outta there!
Those of you who were at Indy for CCR might recognize Cam cutting the floor out. The other fellow is John the proprietor – hey, somebody has to take the pics!!
I wish I had a shot of the trunk floor we got as it still had the original maroon paint on it! Unbelievable! Anyway, I gave it a coat of Tremclad before it was to go in:
Wait! Here’s the two pieces retrieved for Barry and myself:
Only a few weeks into it and lots has happened!

August 16, 2017 at 00:00 #52695Dave (a.k.a. rodncustomdreams)ParticipantWe now return to our originally scheduled program ..already in progress.
John had a solid door for me too, as the bottom of the driver’s door had turned to lace on the ’41..

August 16, 2017 at 00:24 #52696Dave (a.k.a. rodncustomdreams)ParticipantBefore I go any further I want to give warning. While I shot photos nearly every day of the progress Neil and Lorne were making, they may not seem to connect in a logical order. I will try not to scramble things too badly, but because more than one person was working on the car at any given time, there was a bit of jumping around from area to area – allowing things to cool, avoiding getting in each other’s way, that sort of thing. Everything should be covered fairly thoroughly in the end (I hope!).
So, this part looks better already don’t you think?
A much better replacement rear fender in a trial fitting after replacing most of the inner quarter and mounting lip of the body (old patched one in the background):
Driver’s side rear was in better shape, but still needed the bottom metal replaced:
After years of wanting a custom with a sunken antenna, this one had to go as I felt it was a ’50’s/’60s thing and not right for a ’40s styled car. Besides there was a tear nearby so that needed work anyway..:
Another donor piece:

August 16, 2017 at 00:39 #52697Dave (a.k.a. rodncustomdreams)ParticipantReplacing the one rear fender required the filling of the original tail light opening and installing the custom piece from the old fender:
Time for the old, rotten trunk floor to come out:
While others did the serious and skilled work I was trying to stay busy (helpful?).. Found that the car had under-car neon! Whaaaaatttt…!
So if any of y’all are interested in a neon system (found it to be purple) lemme know! Ha, ha.

August 16, 2017 at 01:01 #52698Dave (a.k.a. rodncustomdreams)ParticipantAt this point it was no surprise to find the tool compartments were gone as well:
The tool box portion of the car is available new, as are lower cowl portions, lower rear quarters behind the doors and, I believe inner and outer rockers, although Neil was confident in fabbing those.. Before the new tool box/rear valance piece could go in, a corner portion was shaped to form the area between the fender and valance on each side:
One of the few brand new pieces utilized:
Trunk floor is in now too – with more bzzt, bzzt, bzzt!:

August 16, 2017 at 08:30 #52704Rik HovingKeymasterAmazing to see how much work went into this Dave. So much more than I had visualized when looking at the finishing photos you had shared. Looking forward to see the next instalment.
Thanks for sharing.Enjoy the beauty of Customizing

We learn from those that came before us………Really interesting to see what lurks under the paint. I am sure that at some point my customs will be done over and some one will scratch their head in disbelief about how I did some things as well. 🙂
Great to see this one brought back to tip-top condition.
Keep it coming Dave.

August 16, 2017 at 18:28 #52709Ian GibbonsParticipantWow Dave I am shocked at how much nasty stuff was covered up. We must be crazy with the number of setbacks we all seem to have to push through to build these cars. Really enjoying watching how you got the car to what it is today!
August 16, 2017 at 23:18 #52710Dave (a.k.a. rodncustomdreams)ParticipantAs you fellows have observed there was a substantial amount of “nasty stuff” involved here. Of course once you go down the road to tearing into things you can’t really turn back..? I wonder sometimes..
Anyway, a bit more fabbing in the rear corner:
And additional work being done to replace the inner quarter:
Portions of the inner and outer rockers needed replacing apparently..!?!
Here is where the repair was required. The new lower fender bit is visible in the car behind the tool box, but we won’t need that yet:
Beauty job of bending new rockers:
And creating new quarter/b pillar brace where it had rotted away:
Some images, like the one above are a bit blurry. I think I was shaking due to hours adding up! :-O

August 16, 2017 at 23:44 #52712Dave (a.k.a. rodncustomdreams)ParticipantTime for an early fitment check:
Dang if I can remember what this was all about. I think there was more support for the roof inside while work on the shape of the top continued.. You might notice that I suggested an even more rounded door corner as I felt the shape around the window should be more constant:
Driver’s side rockers were rotted in a different location due to the swiss cheese condition of the door bottom. New stuff goes in!
Looks like someone was here before:
Much, much better!
