FOUND……!!!!!! THE FAMOUS…………….. THE MG / 100 ” TIGRESS ” On the banking at Brooklands in 1930
In the 1930’s Brooklands Race track was full of Art Deco racing cars, Some of witch inspired some of the worlds best coach builders…… Not much is said about this race and the moment in time some of the best art deco / Custom cars were built…….
I have always been fascinated with this race and wondering what happened to all those amazing cars that were built buy the best coach builders and even back your boys wanting to hold there on and emulate this amazing race…..
I can only day dream about these cars surviving WW2 and I can only imagine how many wear destroyed for the WAR EFFORT….WW2 …How many were left buy allied men to go home because of the build up of WW2…..???
It is hard to fathom just how many cars were built and raced and it would seem that there was so many….!!
How many were still hidden in barns in England……. We now only have the black and white photos to see what a wonder it would of been to see a full track of art deco cars of all makes and sizes rumbling flat out towards the straight away to show who was the fastest……!!!
Hailing from MONTEREY California U.S.A and only having my shop as stones throw from LAGUNA SECA RACE TRACK , I have been fortunate to be able to spend countless hours watching some of these historic cars roar around this track, And having access to the worlds best engine builder with an unmarked building , Once in while some one will see some of the worlds most exotic cars emerge from the building, With just as famous owners From having an engine rebuilt or some old guy bring it down for tune.
Names that would be set in IRON and would go down in history…….Some of these survivors must pop up for sale commanding prices most of us could never afford……!!! With the cars making there way to some guys car collection or put in a container and set sail on the ocean’s to the U.S.A to be kept in another collection and maybe offered for sale at one of the high end car auctions……… This eras ozzes custom , An era that Barris would look into to bring home his own style of this ART DECO ERA to the U.S.A. It is no secret that this ART DECO ERA was not born in the good ol U.S.A But in the hands of craftsman in Europe……
There is also another side that exists of this amazing era ….. Also….One that if you are lucky enough to keep a sharp eye open you may be able to buy one of those amazing Brooklands painting’s …..But the ART DECO ARTWORK that was also done in this era buy a few of the men who witnessed the birth of those FRENCH cars of the 1900’s along with over 300 other makes that were out of business by the end of 1930’s…..
I have always seen this BROOKLANDS ART WORK on the internet and it is so rare like the cars that survive I had never seen anything in person ever……!!!
While at the markets 6 weeks ago I was looking for trinkets and then my eyes from a far saw this amazing original painting in the distance as if I was one of those guys in the crowed watching the BROOKLANDS RACE myself…… Soon as I saw the painting I was told it was $265…… Witch I could not open my wallet fast enough to produce……Not knowing what I was exactly buying…? It was the art work I had seen existed but never seen for real in person, Being a passionate collector of BARRIS and Kustom art deco I was in love at first sight……….!!!
After being seen by people dressed like the normal California kustom guy people began to take an imitate interest as to why I was pulling as many notes as I could out of my wallet for this meaningless painting sitting on the ground propped up…..!, I guess people could see my excitement and it drew the attention of people all around……. After giving the guy his $265 he handed me back $15 and said make it an even $250, Knowing that there was something very special about this painting I gave the guy 1 last chance to change his mind and said with an honest tone…Pal are you sure this is all ok….? He said for sure I just made $150 Bucks……!!!
Once home I hung it on my wall and every night I sit looking at my painting mesmerized buy its beauty, Looking at all the thousands of brush strokes and gently touching them in oor of how long something like this must of taken to paint……I then looked at it from the prospective of a kustom car builder chopping that roof on your beloved kustom to create a one off master piece that will show the world this was your creation…… But not before standing back and looking at your handy work over 3 thousand times looking to make sure your eyes are happy with the flow……
I wondered how many times did this amazing artist stand back and look at this painting , Capturing a moment in time Not on film with a camera but with a memory of what this artist saw at the BROOKLANDS RACE, Of two cars duking it out for that first place checkered flag…. Its like an old kustom sitting forgotten in a barn or a junk yard or in some cases a field left to rot while people pilfer parts off something historic not knowing the damage they are doing to us KUSTOM car guys and the future rebuild of something special …. Kustom cars represent history we car guys live for and breath and all wish we were around at the time when it was no big deal…..
After an accident typing Brooklands just looking at art deco race cars the original photo of my painting popped up and I nearly fainted…..!!!
There it was…..!!!! THE FRONT COVER OF THE 1930 BROOKLANDS RACE SCHEDULE….
The kolor sketch FREDERICK GORDON CROSBY did before the race printed on the race schedule…..
The ” TIGERESS ” ……………………….!!!! On the banking at Brooklands
After some research is was able to discover that my painting was brought by boat from ENGLAND some time just before WW2….. It was kept in a barn with its glass broken and mold starting to take effect…..Tho this damage was minimal after all these decades …! Just one day at the market and people were scratching the flaking paint off with no understanding of what they were looking at……………
There seems to be at least 3 known painting of this particular depiction with 1 of the painting selling for over $50,000 U.S.D
Not that it matters a thing to me what it is worth, But I just feel honored that good KARMA came my way and this painting feel into my care, Because so far I have endless hours of joy just looking at it on my wall, And when im bumbed out for some reason and feel sad or not able to work on KUSTOMS or my INDIAN MOTORCYCLES , I just glance a the at the painting and it some how fills that void of not having my paint gun in my hand or my hammer and dollie tapping away……!!!
And it makes me happy like I am at BROOKLANDS in 1930……!!!
Keep your eyes open many treasures to be found out there…..
If you found some thing special to you ………Please share it
