I wondered what a full width grill based on the frenched version Dave did would look like.. This would require a couple of extra grills to accomplish:

December 7, 2018 at 23:13 #62032Quentin HallParticipantWell done Scarlet. Looks like you may have the affections of perhaps your dad, a boyfriend and a few other loyal gentlemen. Please ensure they are fed and watered after each day of toil.
I was just watching an English crime drama last night and there was a lovely 1953 Sunbeam Talbot convert. I was chopping the top in my mind as I watched it.
I like the Curved window frames and agree with Tony’s comment . The swoopy lines of the fenders are recreated in the frames and go hand in hand.
I love the 41 Packard grille.
December 23, 2018 at 07:33 #62288Rik HovingKeymasterFrom Tony Devey….
“The original number plates on the somerset are enormous way out of proportion to the rear end, so today’s job was make a start on an American plate behind glass. First thing was to get rid of the raised squared off panel, this was soon done but the replacement was a little trickier with it’s double curves and returned edge at the bottom. Anyways didn’t get time to start on the plate box but happy with what I done, hopefully sort the rest over the holiday. Whilst I have your attention it will be screen time soon anybody have any experience turning a curved opening into a V flat screen, seems a lot of cutting and welding am I right?”

I have jumped on to the rear at the moment as waiting for some repro 356A Porsche horn grills to arrive to start the front.
The main problem with the Somerset grill is it’s a cast alloy so difficult to alter but I did like the frenched version with the surround removed I will certainly be giving that some thought very stylish but keeping that Austin identity.

January 1, 2019 at 21:19 #62335tony deveyParticipantManaged to finish the number plate today, I’ve always been a fan of number plates behind glass and this is the third one I have done. Used my head this time and made it all up on the bench with an over sized flange, trimmed to suit after cutting the hole in the panel. Way better went like clockwork.

Looks really fantastic.

January 20, 2019 at 23:16 #62593tony deveyParticipantA small job, but with a big impact. Turned out surprisingly simple to complete, I have fitted the original grill from behind the panel. Didn’t even require any additional metal. I managed to massage the return lip into shape and trim off the excess. Looks quite slick, almost got an Alfa Romeo look about it. Thanks to the guys who took the trouble to photo shop their suggestions.

That’s what customizing is all about.
