Thanks for the moral support Wolf. I remember taking that pic you just reposted, when it was all a big plate of jello wobbling about and thinking, ” I just cut up the straightest rust free car I’ve ever owned!!!”
The last 18 months has been the worst rollercoaster ride I could ever imagine. If it wasn’t for the friendships I’ve forged here and a group of mates and family that have stood rock solid for me, I think I could have lost the plot. . . . Err, I mean lost the plot even more than I had lost the plot prior to starting the build.
Back to the rear fenders. Bert can you post a pic of inside the 41 fender? I like the idea of emulating the 41 style but a little less square on the rear corner. The tires are very close to the inside of the guard already.

It’s deserving of some more thought and attention, more idea contributions from your mates, and a bit of front and center. That Caddy is really, really special in the cutting edge from coach-built to custom. Sitting on the curb and cheering your parade.

Berts pics show that the edge is similar to the 53 edge.
I took a template of the roof and transposed it on the fender and got this shape.

I think that the rear edge of the skirt should more mimic the shape of the fender so that the roof shape and the fender shape melt together.
Perhaps slightly longer than the sample I show.
Flush
On top… this version needs to be either a little bigger, or the wheel opening needs to be a bit smaller at the top and front. (I think I like the flush idea better though)
Enjoy the beauty of Customizing
February 10, 2017 at 08:20 #47691Bert GustafssonParticipantLincoln had a similar approach with their wheel opening/fender skirt.
February 10, 2017 at 11:11 #47692TonyParticipantRik is right, do that.
February 10, 2017 at 13:59 #47693Larry PointerParticipantChiming in again: as Torchie also pointed out earlier, the style of this later period has a more abrupt drop to the rear of the fender. Rik’s illustration to show the contrast between the tapered versus “fitting fender” pair of lines really helps. Guess we’re ganging up on you, Quentin.

February 10, 2017 at 14:20 #47696TorchieParticipantWow!! Love the last 2 pics.
Quentin. I knew you were amazing but I didn’t realize that you were a time traveler as well.
Next time you go back to 1940’s LA could you pick me up some parts? 🙂
On a more serious note……
I like the shape of the skirts in the above two shots. To my eye the rear of the skirts shouldn’t drop down to a point or a tear drop shape regardless of the roof profile.
The profile that the eye will pick up on and compare the skirt to is the rear fender shape.
On a personal note. Stay strong and move forward. As my dear old Dad ( Ex Military) used to say. “It’s harder to hit a moving target.”

As soon as Rik showed me his version following the fender shape any doubts were gone.
Rik’s ghost outline one shows it even better. So lucky to have the best coach in the business and good guys on my team. . . . And Tony, I don’t care what the others say, nobody wears pigtails and a cheerleader’s outfit quite like you.
February 10, 2017 at 23:10 #47708Gordon McMillanParticipantI like the revised skirt shape and general size, it really works, but something about the trailing edge of it doesn’t jell.
I know it reflects the shape of the front fender, but that trailing edge needs just a little something different – of course I wont see it from here in Scotland anyway.
February 10, 2017 at 23:25 #47709TonyParticipantQuentin, please keep me out of your role playing fantasies.
February 14, 2017 at 08:42 #47742Quentin HallParticipantI saw this over on the hamb. I am wondering about the larger skirt as shown terms tends to slim down the fender.
I also want to be mindful that Cadillac hadn’t yet invented flush fit skirts till 41. I just wonder if flush fit well make it look newer than my 39/40 era preference. Restoration is so much easier than customising . . . Haha.
