about 4 years ago I picked up a pretty nice ’40 coupe that was disassembled a few years earlier and changed hands several times. plan is to make a chopped long door tail dragger out of it.

picked up a nice set of 2 door sedan doors that are 6 1/4″ longer than the coupe doors. you can see the difference in length with the doors side by side. the last picture shows the sedan door hung on the stock body.

the b-pillar needed to be moved back the same distance so 6 1/4″ was cut out of the quarterpanel. since I wanted to keep the quarter window the factory size, the back half of the roof needed to be moved back. the body was cut through the belt line, back to and across the catwalk. the roof was cut through the top of the door jam then towards the back and across over the top of the rear window.

once the b-pillar was cut loose from the floor the back half of the roof could be picked up and moved back the same 6 1/4″. just tacked in place for now. since the body gets narrower as it goes back, the rear of the roof is now wider than the body. lots of fitting to be done. the car will be chopped 4″ so I got impatient and cut part of the door top just to see.

    So you’re making a 40 Club Coupe.

All those changing tapers are going to be fun to deal with!

cut out the rear window and will replace it with a ’46 rear window with no divider.

started the 4″ chop by cutting the a-pillars. here the top is lowered and just sitting in place.

before the a-pillars could be welded, the b-pillars had to be cut loose from the top and chopped. then square tubing was clamped inside and underneath to make sure the a-pillar angle was correct.

usually on a-pillars I sleeve them for extra strength. on these I thought it would be easier cut them open then weld inside and out and just put a new skin on it.

Thanks for sharing the steps, visually, and your thinking behind the decision process as you go, Mike. Your vision is emerging already, in 3D!
