I managed to get the whole fender onto my English wheel and was able to roll out the top and what a difference it made. It suddenly transformed into a rigid, single form. All the tension that was pulling it out of shape disappeared and it suddenly sat down like a one piece stamping. Last night I made the lower inner front section and welded it in. Just got to roll up to the side of the hood and a small bit against the cowl at back and she is ready for blasting.

So, given your arsey ability to have things fall into place, have you considered whether the Saab glass could work if trimmed? Glass is sometimes trimmed by blasting, which is what made me think of it.
August 8, 2020 at 01:59 #68112Quentin HallParticipantNo it won’t work. Modern glass is curved and regardless I’ve done away with two piece side glass. It won’t be an issue. I can get laminated glass cut easily.

The shape is sublime but all the reshaping and welding has put an inward bow on the trouserleg seam down the middle top of the fender. I may have to beat out the crease and reform it with a chisel and a sandbag but I still have a support brace to weld against the hood side. But first is worst and the other side fender is better condition.Â

August 14, 2020 at 08:24 #68140Rik HovingKeymasterThe shape of the front fender looks absolutely amazing in the photo Q. And the before and now is just unbelievable.
Enjoy the beauty of Customizing

Agreed! Wow. The previous owner must have really thought he got away with something when you bought that mess. But, the rest is really impressive vision and workmanship on a true CUSTOM on your part!

Ive got to admit that so far it has exceeded my expectations in so far as how everything has fallen in to place. But the devil is in the details and there are s still a lot of brainwork that goes on behind the scenes to make it all work. My paid work on the 53 Eldo s  has increased so the big progress will slow and I’ll tackle details now for a while. But the essence is there now.
Its a joy to walk into the workshop in the morning and see this beautiful sight.
My wiper towers will arrive this week and I need to work out a internal locking mechanism for the hood sides. Everyday I am scouting for bits big and small.
August 21, 2020 at 08:28 #68188Quentin HallParticipantThis little bastard nearly beat me. A compound reverse roll will a stepped edge to accomodate the hood side. 7 hrs solid!!!! To get the stepped edge I ran it thru the bead roller then I had to English wheel the little reverse curve . But it was a bear. The roll would go nice and then pull the gap for the hood. Back and forth, back and forth. I’m knackered. But it’s fitting perfectly. I won’t do any more till I decide on a locking mechanism…..
