Seeing Mark Skipperā€™s beautiful header made me pull my finger out and Ā go to the shed.

Got mine all welded up and aligned. Despite being stainless it will probably get painted satin black …. but it will never rust.Ā 63918AF9-1794-440D-90A9-D21FB5E7B0F4

BEC624BF-99AA-4ACC-8C0E-BA84847EE6ACCan you believe it? I ventured across the road and had a look at the 39 Cadillac on the weekend. Being absorbed in the Packard , I had forgotten how beautiful the Caddy is. But I must be strong and keep forging ahead on the Packard.

The first thing I noticed though was the Sixty Special wiper towers which have the perfect flat base. So a quick search on eBay came up with a pair of nice cores missing the innards. So I dug out the crusty, pitted original, chain drive Packard ones and soaked them in oil overnight.

Got on the Cadillac forum to see how you pull them apart. A mate of mine who passed away last year had put a post up in 2015 saying you just use oversized washers and put a nut on the end and tighten and the splined shaft should pull free. Which I thought would be impossible given the gunk and accumulated rust. Nevertheless out they came with ease. And the innards are perfect. So I just have to be patient and wait for the Cadillac outers to be mated with the Packard inners.

I hope Steve Passmore is looking down and enjoying it all.

Beautiful lines those -39-40 Packard Darrins have both with and without those runningboards , -41 Cadillac had runningboards as an option for those conservative buyers that was against the idea of step right down on the street from the car , lol ! 41 Cadillac runningboards

Been busy working on a 53 Eldo, so the Packard has languished un31003FEF-77D0-4956-811A-F589300D4298loved for a week or so. So this arvo I dug out the front fender and filled 101 pits and welded up a coupe of joints in the upper section and liberally applied rust converter to clean it up. Iā€™ll hopefully come in tomorrow and it will be ready to hang on the car again after a quick run through the English wheel and hopefully by the end of the week sheā€™ll be back on the car.
