A few days ago we published a great article by Tom Nielsen on the CCC-Main site about the 1933-34 Fords done as Custom Car. If you have not seen the article take a look HERE.
Ever since I first saw a photo of the Wes Collins 1934 Ford roadster with the DuVall windshield I have been in love with the Ford Model-40 done as Custom Car. And over the years I have collected many photos of these cars, mostly from the 1940’s customized in stead of Hot Rodded.
I know that most people think “Hot Rod” when the 1933 / 1934 Fords are mentioned. But ever since that Wes Collin’s sample in Rod & Custom magazine (August 1990) I always think Custom Car… Personally I think that these cars make very nice early style Custom Cars. The body lines are all there, from the sweeping front fenders, the slight curve on the grille, the wonderful molding around the belt-line, and if you go with a full body the round lines of the top, especially at the rear.
This is the first photo I saw of the amazing Wes Collin’s 1934 Ford Roadster in Pat Ganahl’s DuVall “Vee” windshield article.
I will be adding some more great samples of 1933-34 Ford Custom cars to this thread in the next couple of days, and hopefully we can get somebody inspired to built one of these cars into a more custom version.
I know of at least three people who had plans to built a 34 Ford custom, but for what ever reason the plans never materialized. In the Rodder’s Journal issue 51 Pat Ganahl did an excelent article on the Wes Collins 1934 Ford. This article showed some amazing color photos from the late 1940’s of Wes’s Ford at the D&B Auto Sales store.
This photo shows the car in a later light color
Alex Xydias his 1934 Cabriolet. Some of the work on his great looking custom was done by Jimmy Summers.
The long and pointy GM headlights really work well with these cars. Here is another nice sample of a car that was customized in the 1940’s Cut out doors for more comfort as this Hot Rod Magazine photo shows.
The white wall tires and Caddy Hubcaps look good, but the stance is still a bit Hot Rod.
Then a couple of month ago I came across this photo on the internet… And I thought… WOW.. Somebody finally got it right.
Still the stance is a bit too Hot Rod caused by the big and little white wall tires and the wheels could use some full covers. But the skirts and the long headlights in combination with the DuVall windshield work fantastic. The photo was taken by FalconGeorge
But unfortunately all other photos I found of the car after that show it with the Hot Rod stance and without the skirts… I guess the car is again owned by a Hot Rodder. Still it looks great, but with all the right ingredients all there including the Lincoln Bumpers… this one really should be turned Custom Car…
More later…

I think they look kind of cool but I would much rather be screaming across a lake bed when it comes to a 34 roadster.Cool thing to see that some were built in this fashion back in the day.Just another aspect of Customs.

REGARDING THIS WHITE THREE-WINDOW, IT IS THE GRANATELLI BROTHERS CAR. IN THE FORTIES IT WAS A STREET-DRIVEN HOT ROD. THE BROTHERS BOUGHT AN OLD MILLER RACE CAR, TOOK THE FULL-LOAD FLATHEAD FROM THE COUPE AND INSTALLED IT IN THE MILLER. THEY THEN DROVE (!) THE MILLER FROM CHICAGO TO INDIANAPOLIS AND QUALIFIED IT FOR THE INDY 500. THEY DIDN’T WIN, BUT WHAT A HEROIC EFFORT. THE COUPE EXISTS TODAY AND HAS BEEN NICELY RESTORED.

Here are a few 40’s pictures from the John-Blizzard Collection. Cars his father either owned, or worked on as in his upholstery/top shop.
