Watson outlined ’54 Olds
WATSON OUTLINED PERFECTION
This 1954 Oldsmobile is a prime example of Larry Watson’s color, design and stylingĀ skills. Larry always choose the right colors and graphical elements, to get the lines of the car look at its very best.
Larry Watson’s Custom paint work is legendary. Which can be seen on the many photos from Larry’s Personal Collection which we are sharing on the Custom Car Photo Archive and the CCC-Site. Every master has at least a few high points on his career. The outline paint jobs that Larry Watson created belong to my personal favorite highlights in his career. The ability of Larry Watson to use specific colors, paint type and designs to highlight and improve the cars characteristics are just incredible. His designs and techniques create instant custom cars out of near factory stock car. A trend, which highlights in the late 1950’s and 1960’s andĀ that lasted for many years. It is a style that is still being used today… although perhaps not as much as it should. The 1954 Olds in this article shows what the right paint job can do for a car.
When Roger O’Dell shared the files of the Larry Watson Personal Collection with me to share on the Custom Car Photo Archive there were a couple of photos making be get goose bumps. The photos of this 1954 Olds are among those. The car is so simple and so stunning. And the Watson Shop Wall background makes it even more spectacular.
The front 3/4 view on this 1954 Oldsmobile shows there are no overdone pin striping to “make up” for removed chrome trip, or out of place custom additions anywhere on this car.

These two photos in this article is all we have on the car. No name of an owner came with these photos and so fr none of the people we have talked to remembered the car, nor the owner. The 1954 Oldsmobile was mildly customized before Larry went to work on it. The emblems were removed from the car, and the door handles were shaved to highlight the cars beautiful lines. The car was lowered and sat on nice size white wall tires dressed up with color detailed Lancer four bar hubcaps. To further customized the car a set of lake pipes and set of spotlights was mounted. Then Larry went to work and applied a wonderful cream or off-white pearl. He then outlined the body lines and applied a burnt orange candy over the pearl. Then he applied a dark orange thin pinstripe to the outline of this. The huge body of the Oldsmobile almost looks sectioned after Larry was done with it. This is what paint can do. The Oldsmobile also has a white with orange piping interior, and I really like the matching cover over the rear seats with the burnt orange stripes. I wish Larry was still here to tell us more about this car, who owned it, and where it went after these two snapshot were taken. If anybody knows anything more about this gorgeous 1954 Oldsmobile painted by Larry Watson, please let us know.

This close up shows the wonderful outlines and perfect radius corners around the body highlights.

The light egg-shell off-white pearl paint with candy burnt orange combination works extremely well with the wide whites and bright chrome. The matching interior blends everything together.
