I came across these in progress photos of the Butler Rugard’s 1940 Mercury created by Harry Westergard and less Crane during the restoration under supervision of Jack Walker. This stage of the restoration was done by Custom Image Auto Body.
Interesting to see these photos although I never really understood why this car was painted candy red though.

“My dad’s 55 Dodge full kustom built 2 months after he bought it new. He did all the work on it in his body shop in 55. He was a original customizer and coachman from the 40’s to his passing in 2006. He used red toner before being called candy apple over gold powder base mixed with real crushed 14 karat gold. It won many trophies including best paint awards at that time. The pics don’t do the paint justice as it was taken off old color slides to digital. He built many other cars plus customer cars. He was sorta unknown but a true innovator.”

Very nice car. It sure looks like a lift off top but I read somwhere that it wasn’t?
Funny thing is that me and Wolf talked about two seaters just a few weeks ago and asked ourselves who would be the first to figure out that a sedanette would be a great start for a two seated roadster. Guess we know now.
