The crew at Ida Automotive is starting another Custom Project again.
This time an 1950 Mercury convertible with chopped, working folded top.
It looks like this one will be another very interesting projects… so lets follow the progress as Rob Ida shares it on his Facebook.

    From Rob Ida…
We’re Making a working design model of a newly restyled folding convertible top. We are changing the shape dramatically but also making it fold fasten and hide just like it was designed in 1950. Hydraulic movement, hardware and material will make it appear as if it was originally made this way from the factory. The new design starts further up the quarter panel and will get a slightly lengthened trunk lid to reduce the distance between the trunk and rear roof bow. The windshield is tipped back a few degrees to make the proportions well balanced.

That is a very nice stock Mercury convert to start customizing! I am sure it will be pretty spectacular when finished.
The folding top plans will make it look great too.

What a dream to start with a Merc in that condition. I got lucky on Jeff MacMillan’s ’51 Merc coupe that had perfect floors and nice gaps…made the kustom work so much easier.

That new roof line looks great so far! Like anything coming out of Ida Automotive, this will push the envelope and definitely be one to keep an eye on.

Thanks for keeping us posted πŸ™‚

With the chopped top and laid back windshield, the vent Windows needed to be reconfigured pivot point locations and radius to hold the tolerances. Ryan @dropndrive expertly executed the modification. The changes will be invisible in the end.

Plotting out the new roof profile on the 1950 Mercury Convertible. Arranging the bow distance, bow arc, window line, and length. The top now breaks and folds yielding a more compact folded assembly which can allow for a top of less surface area of canvas. Proportionately beneficial to the size and shape of the body.

The convertible top is functioning well. After rearranging every part of the original frame to mimic the dimensions and pivot points of our restyled working model, we are fine tuning the adjustments to get proper tension on the frame in it’s up position. The timing on the flipper #2 bow is perfect. Now Ryan at DropnDrive is bronze bushing the worn joints to eliminate any play.

“We couldn’t figure out why the Mercury Convertible door top trim didn’t extend onto the quarter panels. Ryan at Dropndrive made some stainless trim to carry the design to the quarter window as well. It’s metal finished stainless steel and after polishing will be a perfect match to the door top.

Looks like a nice Merc to start with- not always the case unless you’re lucky πŸ™‚Β  Nice proportions on the new top coming together. That quarter window beltline stainless is genius- never could figure out why Fomoco dropped the ball on that one!

Thanks to a phenomenal team, Jack’s new 1950 Merc driver is moving right along. We planned a quick Convertible chop and spot in the existing paint. Then that turned into a color change, then that turned into a full bare metal strip which exposed some stuff (zero rust, but a few badly hammered collision repairs).. None the less, the work load quadrupled and the finish date remained.., thanks to the best team we could ever ask to work with Dropndrive Oldsoul_48 Hellcat138 and Sean Lynch Paintworks are all focused on getting it done.

It’s going to be a very mild 50 Merc. We’re not really going for a custom look as much as a “restored/restyled” version

Here is a peek at the color.. trust me, when it’s all done with all of the colors (Convertible top canvas, folding top frame, leather, carpet, chrome, wheels, tires, trim, steering column, steering wheel) the color will come around and work.. I hope.,

That’s Jack and Gene visiting the shop Sunday.

“Time to start getting the Merc back together. Supercharged Flathead can go in while the cut and buff and body assembly simultaneously takes place.”
